1948s weekly poll - Welsh Independence

Mon Jan 18, 2016 3:43 pm

It's about time we all had a good argument.

Are you in favour of an independent Wales or do you want to remain as part of the United Kingdom?

I don't trust the shower if shit in the Assembly. I used to want it, but voting Labour for years has done bugger all for Wales and Leanne Wood is an embarrassment

Not for me without Westminster funding we aren't sustainable

Anyone who believes that Wales is sustainable as an independent entity is living in cloud cuckoo land.

Do you trust Westminster?

If we went independent there'd be better employment prospects in Syria,an altogether foolish notion.

It's far more one sided than I though it would be, seems as though there's little appetite for independence at the moment.

Independence just a scam for great pay, pensions and expenses.

Far less one sided than I expected, typical polls report independence support at less than 5%.

Cameron does deal for steel in China.
And we lose jobs.

Other countries put taxes on imports to give a level playing field to balance out stronger currencies.

We get FYI all.

f**k off Westminster. You only care about London

Re: 1948s weekly poll - Welsh Independence

Stay British? Yes because they do such a great job of looking after us.

They care more about keeping the Chinese happy than they do about Wales.
State funded steel is cheaper than Port Talbot steel. Hence todays job cuts.

Carwyn Jones isn't the assembly though is he.

The main reason most people are against more devolved powers to the Welsh Government is because Labour have done a terrible job over the last few years.

Unfortunately until people in Wales stop voting for Labour, nothing is going to change.

That particular poll was a complete fraud though.

There were a number of different options, only one of them said "Do you support independence at all costs" other options were stuff like "more devolution with a view to independence". The problem Plaid have is they only seem to care about Welsh speakers which leaves the majority of Wales excluded.

The Welsh Government is a good thing, it's not devolution which is the problem it's the labour party (which plaid will go into coalition with and thus back into power this May).

Wales could not run itself end.

We take a lot of money from the UK coffers and for Wales to be able to run itself it would have to raise the tax levels to silly levels. Add to that we have high unemployment and low wages and a country that is obsessed with a dead language

Game over

Yes....On the weekend the govt announces big cutbacks to Welsh language education. It also announces it will spend millions to make sure that. Muslim immigrants learn English or get sent home. What about sending all the English in Wales who complain about the Welsh language back home go England.

The vast majority of non welsh speakers in the country (80% of the country) are Welsh born. Where are you going to send us?

No. I support the Wales football team, but that's as far as my Welshness goes. Got more in common with an English football fan, than a Welsh egg-chaser. Got more in common with an English worker than with a Welsh academic, or poet, etc.

Why would they complain about the Welsh language, when the official language of Wales is English?

Besides, alot of the English living here, usually have money.

In Cardiff we have far more in common culturally with say Scousers than we do with the people of welsh speaking Gwynedd.

Exactly! I lived in Cardiff from 1976 to 2010. It's not just Cardiff, though. Most of Wales is culturally indistinguishable from England. Eastern Wales, in particular, but also counties like Pembrokeshire. I was in Brecon last week. It could have been in Gloucestershire. I'm happy enough being Welsh, and can speak the lingo, but I would hate to see Wales break away from England. Besides, CCFC would have to play in the Welsh Premier League!

In the 1997 devolution referendum it was the narrowest majority in favour of devolution, some question whether voter fraud was involved.
Of the major population centres Wrexham, Newport and Cardiff voted strongly against devolution, only Swansea voted in favour...
So called devolution is in line with the European policy of regionalisation... The illusion is that we have devolved power to Wales... whereas in reality the power is being taken from stronger nation states like the UK once was... Devolving the Health budget to Manchester recently is a recent example of weakening the nation states power to resist European power... Kent has been lumped in with part of France as a European administrative region...
Even while we await our EU referendum in reality power is continually being devolved to Europe as EU policies and directives are acted on...
Anyone fancy arguing with Tony Blair's European Army...
Some believe this to be treason...

Think there's more to an independent Wales than the Welsh language. Be interesting to know what we have that we can export at a competitive price.

Did you just dream that?
If you tax imports you put up prices. How many people prefer to buy the cheaper products? What about the clothing industry, car industry, football industry ?
Just don't buy products that have Chinese steel in. Show solidarity with the British steel industry.

Strong currency means cheaper imports and holidays (far more people will be concerned with that than worrying about the steel industry)

I fundamentally agree with the principle, however, reality means that I cannot support it in practice.

The perfect solution would be a federal state consisting of four equal nations with the same powers. That way, Wales can look after its own interests whilst still being British. People say England would dominate it, but they do now anyway.

As yesterday (And the last 120ish years) has proved, we won't find any help at Westminster. If only Tata had been a bank, the spineless politicians would have been clambering over themselves to Prop it up.

It is weird the difference in confidence between Welsh speakers and English speaking Welsh speakers. It would certainly make for an interesting study on the colonised mind.

I do despair to hear people talking in little more than sound bites, criticising the Assembly (even though they mean the mean Welsh Labour Government).

I guarantee, in 50 years time people will realise it was the best thing that ever happened to Wales. :ayatollah:

Re: 1948s weekly poll - Welsh Independence

Wales was the first country to be conquered by England and in all probability we will be one of the last to be free from their clutches.
I'm quite surprised by the poll results on here when one considers that most on this forum seem ultra right-wing- 27% in favour is good at this present time because Wales is not ready in any way for independence. We do not have the infrastructure or economy for independence at the moment. We have been raped of our resources and nothing has replaced them. We have been treated as a region of England for centuries and it's only since devolution that we've started to think as a nation. Creating a Nation takes time! But it will happen, probably not in my lifetime but rest assured Wales will join the world's nations one day.
As for those who say we are too small and not viable, I say look at Iceland, Ireland or Norway. It will be 100 years this Easter since Ireland took the first steps towards freedom and I'm sure there were many doubters in Ireland too but would they want to reverse things now?
