Jose Riga will play a central role in deciding the future of Tony Watt, News Shopper understands.

Monday 18th Jan 2016

The Scottish striker will return to Charlton tomorrow morning following his loan spell at Cardiff.

Watt was sent to the Bluebirds at the end of November in a hope that regular first team football would inspire a return to form.

Following an early season burst at the Valley, Watt’s form dipped and Charlton took the decision to offer him on loan.

With Watt due to return to the club tomorrow, News Shopper understands that new manager Riga will be an influential figure in any decision over his future.

Several clubs are believed to be tracking the forward, who has scored seven goals in 35 league games for the Addicks, and will signal an interest if Charlton propose another loan deal.

Cardiff chiefs were impressed by Watt’s efforts and hoped to extend the loan deal, but Charlton rejected the request.

“We put it on the table but they were not interested in the loan,” Cardiff chief executive Ken Choo said. “They said no.”

Could be one of those players.

maybe, and i have said several times that people cannot expect him to carry a team for almost a season, and that his form would dip once he joined us permanently.

that said, its a hammer blow that we can't sign him. he is on another level to the strikers we have now.

Reports up there suggested he has always said he wanted a move away and wants the move here.. we want him, he wants the loan extended.. balls in their court.

Agree. They're suggesting there's an alternative interested party on one of their blogs. I've posted it below.

Mercurial striker, Tony Watt, is due back at Sparrows Lane on Tuesday, after completing his loan spell at Cardiff.

The deal was due to be made permanent, but collapsed when the Bluebirds were hit with a transfer embargo.

It was a double whammy for the Addicks, not only did they miss out on a £2,000,000 transfer fee, they will also have Watt's wages back on the books.

Cardiff wanted to extend Watt's loan until the end of the season, but Charlton declined the request.

The fee would have been used to help fund incoming transfers, and the removal of Watt's wages would have helped to balance the books.

Declining the opportunity to extend the loan suggests the Addicks could have an alternative buyer.

Karlan Ahearne-Grant came on as a second half substitute for Cambridge in their goalless draw at Luton on Saturday.

Joe Pigott appeared in Charlton colours for the first time since returning from Southend earlier in the month. Pigott opened the scoring in the Under-21's table topping clash with Millwall at Sparrows Lane on Monday afternoon.

Pigott's 68th minute strike was cancelled out six minutes from time by John Marquis. The result stretched the unbeaten run of the Addicks' Under-21 team to fifteen games.

News 24

New Charlton boss Jose Riga will have an influential say on the future of unsettled striker Tony Watt.

Watt, 22, has returned to the Addicks following his loan spell at Cardiff, but has been linked with a permanent move away from the Valley and a number of other Championship clubs are expected to come in for him.

Some of this depends on how much Watt/his agent actually want to sign for us rather than anyone else.

The bottom line is that Watt can turn down any moves offered to him. He has a contract until the end of the season with Charlton and could decide to sit tight. If that looks like happening then Charlton may change their minds on the loan issue as at least if he's loaned out they save themselves 3-4 months wages.

I appreciate that it's unlikely but not out of the question. Or have I missed something ?

Decent player. Went off the boil after a couple of games.
Think £1m in current situation is not worth it. Remember getting Fraizer Campbell for £600K In January sales few years ago and he pushed on to promotion. Scored in PL as well.

Loan deal ok, but not to buy .

If Charlton agree to sell him somewhere else - but he refuses (purposely) to agree personal terms then Charlton are left paying his wages.....

.... under such circumstances it would then make sense for Charlton to allow him to come to us on loan
