This is how Cardiff City can still sign players despite being placed under transfer embargo
16th Jan 2016
Cardiff City can actually still sign players under certain restrictions. Here's how:
Cardiff City have been placed under transfer embargo for failing to comply with Financial Fair Play restrictions.
However, there are circumstances under which they can still sign players.
Here, we outline how that can actually happen.
HOW CAN CARDIFF ACTUALLY SIGN PLAYERS NOW?
The rules state they will be “prohibited from registering any new professional players (permanent contract or loan)” for the remainder of the 2015/16 season, however there are some exemptions to that rule.
Namely, if a club has 24 or fewer established players in their squad they can sign a player where the “employee costs are less than £600,000 per annum (or pro-rata)”. This equates to a wage of just under £10,000 a week.
WHAT ARE ESTABLISHED PLAYERS?
Established players are considered players who are 21 or over who have made at least five starting appearances for the club. This includes loan players currently on loan at the club.
HOW MANY ESTABLISHED PLAYERS DO CARDIFF HAVE?
The Bluebirds currently have 22 such players, including Tony Watt, who is expected to return to Charlton after Saturday's match with Wolves, as things stand.
ARE THEY ALLOWED TO PAY TRANSFER OR LOAN FEES?
The answer to this is no.
IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY OF SIGNING PLAYERS?
Yes. Cardiff can sign players on a 'one in, one out' basis as long as the incoming player is on less than 75% of the wages of the departing player and the wage is under that £600,000 per annum figure. Again, no fee is allowed to be paid.
ANY OTHER OPTIONS?
Cardiff could recall their players who are on loan, depending on the terms of the loan deals in place. The likes of Adam Le Fondre, Tom Adeyemi and Eoin Doyle would not be classed as 'new players' as they would not need to be registered.
