The rumour mill has been in overload after Cardiff made a bid for the striker before Christmas, so we took a look at his background to find out what the Bluebirds would be getting
Will Weghorst make the move to the Cardiff City Stadium?
After letting Kenwyne Jones join Abu Dhabi club Al-Jazira yesterday and question marks over the future of strikers Federico Macheda and Alex Revell, Cardiff City are in the market for a front-man.
One player linked with a move to South Wales is Dutchman Wout Weghorst, who currently turns out for Eredivisie side Heracles. But who is the forward Cardiff City have turned to? Here is our fact-file on the Netherlands U21 international.
The basic details
Who: Wout WeghorstAge: 23. Born August 7, 1992
Previous clubs: FC Emmen
Current club: Heracles Almelo
Nationality: Dutch
U21 international caps: 1
Value: £1m+
StrengthsThe Dutchman is good in the air and can bring other players into the game with his hold-up play. Despite not being an out-and-out finisher, the 6'5" striker has netted six times in his 16 Eredivisie appearances this season and carries a considerable threat from set pieces. If Cardiff were to purchase the 23-year-old, a second striker may follow as Weghorst would provide the perfect foil for a pacey strike-partner.
Despite being approached by the Bluebirds last December, sources at the club have said that interest in the striker has not been reignited. Weghorst himself however has claimed today that Russell Slade does want to bring him to South Wales, but Malaysian owner Vincent Tan is less enthused with the potential transfer. The forward has also attracted interest from Scottish giants Celtic and City may need to move quickly if they are to sign the youngster.
Good signing?Despite not being a prolific goalscorer, Weghorst would provide Cardiff with a direct option up-front. The striker would be a good capture if he was accompanied by another forward to create a partnership with - think the Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe Tottenham era. Fans my be less pleased with the signing if the Dutchman is played in a lone role, utilised as a target-man for route one football.
