‘Tony Watt is the spark Cardiff need to ignite play-off push’

The 22-year-old front-man is currently on loan at Cardiff City from Charlton and is expectedly only a week away from signing permanently for around £1 Million. We’re going to take a look at what justifies the potential signing and why it is so imperative that the Bluebirds snap up the former Celtic man long term.

You might think it’s naive to get excited about a striker who’s only played eight games and only scored in two of those but can you blame us?

Cardiff have had an incredibly baron spell in terms of strikers and there’s been far too many who have looked like Rivaldo on You Tube but then look like Stuart Fleetwood when they arrive (and that’s not to cause offence to the former Bluebird).

The Cardiff team whether it was under Russell Slade or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whether they are playing well or poorly, have looked flat and soul-less for some time with no visible passion or fight from the players.

I have no doubt that the players give everything for the cause, especially this season but the Bluebirds’ players hardly wear their heart on their sleeve.

When Tony Watt arrived, the Bluebirds’ faithful could have been forgiven for feeling sceptical, given that the former Standard Liege striker hasn’t settled in since he has left Celtic and besides, when was the last time signing a player from a team much lower than you in the league table attracted a sell-out crowd?

The pressure was on for Watt because with his record of not hitting the ground running and not settling in, he was beginning to pick up a bad reputation as a player. Despite this, Watt arrived at Cardiff with a very good attitude and settled in in a matter of days.

I can’t tell you Watt is going to break goal-scoring records, after all, he’s only scored two goals thus far but it’s his off-the-ball movement and his work ethic that lifts the Cardiff squad and indeed the crowd who watch on.

Fraizer Campbell was probably the last striker to be treasured by Bluebirds’ supporters but in terms of sheer consistency, you could argue that the South Wales club have never replaced Championship goal-scoring machine Michael Chopra who left in rather sour circumstances but certainly did the job in all four spells at the Welsh capital.

What Cardiff were missing is someone fellow players can look to when they are losing, see that his team-mate is working over-time and take some inspiration, perhaps a little like Craig Bellamy but of course at a lesser quality.

Watt is one of those players and picking up the man of the match award in a 1-0 loss away to Birmingham highlights that.

Cardiff boss Russell Slade has talked about how he wanted the “right types of characters in the changing room” and he’s right, it’s a big part of a successful team.

I also believe Tony Watt fits massively into that theory and although Cardiff still need to add pace and perhaps a nasty character in midfield, they’ve done right or are set to do so with a passionate and fiery attacking player.

I don’t believe Tony Watt will be the next Jamie Vardy, perhaps he will spend the rest of his career as a Championship player but for Cardiff building a good squad, he is one of the most shrewd and perhaps the best option we could have asked for, especially during the winter window when every player seems so precious to every team.

To put it into perspective, if the deal goes through next week at the expected sum of £1 Million then Cardiff will have secured Tony Watt for less than half the price of Adam Le Fondre and I don’t think I’m over-exaggerating when I say we have had more value for money in eight games of Watt’s loan period than in twenty-one of Adam Le Fondre’s appearances, and he’s only scored one less goal.

With Kenwyne Jones heading outwards, Cardiff will need to replace the Trinadian with a striker who possesses a presence because with Mason and Watt up top, there’s not much to aim for but lets not forget Cardiff still have Idriss Saadi to come back and Federico Macheda is not back to full fitness quite yet so Russell Slade has options.

Russell Slade has been largely criticized for his transfer dealings but whether he was offered the player or not, he will have done right if/when Tony Watt puts pen to paper. It’s more than unlikely at this stage but if Tony Watt returns to Charlton, it could be the worst thing that could happen to Cardiff City’s season and their play-off hopes.
