Chairman of Dutch club Heracles Almelo tonight confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Cardiff City regarding the transfer fee for striker Wout Weghorst. Cardiff are looking to replace striker Kenwyne Jones who tonight left on loan for UAE club Al-Jazira.

Heracles chairman Jan Smit speaking to Fox Sport confirmed that his club has agreed a transfer fee for the 6ft 5″ striker. The fee is expected to be in excess of £700,000 and Cardiff will now speak to Weghorst and his representatives regarding his contract and personal terms before the move can be completed.

Chairman Jan Smit told Fox Sport “The ball is now with him” after the fee was agreed on Tuesday night, almost instantly after Cardiff striker Kenwyne Jones left the club on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Cardiff boss Russell Slade was keen to replace Kenwyne Jones with another target man and has admitted he’s in the market for a striker.

Wout Weghorst is a 23-year-old forward who has one cap for the Netherlands Under-21s, he has been at Heracles Almelo since 2014 when he joined on a free transfer from FC Emmen. Weghorst graduated from the Willem II Under 21 side before moving on to FC Emmen in 2012.

The 23-year-old striker has played sixteen of Heracles seventeen league matches so far this season and has scored six league goals. In all competitions he has made eighteen appearances scoring seven times. Heracles are currently fourth in the Dutch Eredivisie and are on course to grab a Europa League spot for next season.

The Dutchman’s current contract runs until the end of the season and Heracles Almelo are keen to get a fee for him if the striker wants to move on. Chairman Jan Smit is understood to be keen on the player and in the unlikely event he doesn’t leave then Heracles may take up the option of extended his contract at the end of this term.
