Cardiff City have had a £1 million deal in place for a number of weeks as they look to make Watt's loan move permanent later this month

Tony Watt wants to stay a Bluebird - that is according to the man who aims to be his strike partner at Cardiff City, Joe Mason.

The pair linked up for the first time in the capital club’s hard-fought Championship win over Blackburn on the weekend, where it was Mason who scored the decisive goal in the 1-0 victory.

Watt remains one of the Bluebirds’ main targets this month, with manager Russell Slade determined to turn the 22-year-old’s loan from Charlton into a permanent deal.

The former Celtic-man’s current loan spell is set to end on January 16, with a £1m deal apparently already in place to bring Watt to the Welsh capital.

The striker has proved a revelation since joining the Bluebirds in November, with two goals in eight appearances so far, he has brought a sense of urgency and danger to Slade’s side as they look to keep their play-off push going.

Mason has been as impressed by Watt’s impact at the club as anyone and had now revealed Watt is determined to become a Bluebird full-time this month.

“He wants to stay I think, I mean, by the look of his performances you can see that,” said Mason.

“I hope he stays. Hopefully they can get the deal done. I have been impressed with him. He’s hit the ground running 100 per cent.”

For Mason, the Blackburn game was his first start in the Cardiff side since November 21 and his winner against Rovers made him now the club’s top-scorer this campaign.

With Kenwyne Jones now departing the club to move overseas, 24-year-old Mason believes he can be the man to play a regular part and link up with Watt for the second-half of the campaign.
