' TONY WATT & JOE MASON ? ? '

By Steve Tucker

04/01/16

Bluebirds were headed up front against Forest by two men who most certainly like the ball to feet in the lively Tony Watt and Joe Mason.

It was Mason who finally got the breakthrough the Bluebirds more than deserved for their efforts against Rovers. The striker becoming the club’s top-scorer as he fired home from close range just before the hour after a Craig Noone effort had been cleared from the Rovers’ line.

Mason later spoke of his desire to keep his place in the side after starting the season as No.1 choice before then becoming alienated from the first team.

The charms and talents of Mason are known, but what he does not seem to be is the perfect foil to play with Watt. Not on this evidence at least. The pair looked too similar, to keen to occupy each other’s space too often.

No, moving forward for Slade the future looks to be a like for like replacement for Jones in this month’s transfer window. A key signing indeed. The most important during Slade’s tenure at the capital club for sure.

But even with new additions over this month, with Watt expected to sign permanently, that Jones mark-two arriving and possibly a winger on the Bluebirds shopping list, will Cardiff’s hopes of a play-off place still prove viable with less than half of the season now to go?

Mason / Watt - yet to be convinced on that one from what I witnessed - maybe given time though.

I think Watt / Asaadi is a better match , from what I saw of Asaadi - he inst called the bull for nothing, hard to get off the ball, great ball carrier and kknows exactly what to do in front of goal.

Mason tends to want to run into space and hope that someone passes him the ball - unfortuntaley with our lot - that doesnt seem to happen.

Agree Saadi and Watt would be lethal.

We have only had 80 odd minutes of a partnership which produced a win and a goal from the main striker. Wouldn't suggest the partnership has clicked from the off but you can't argue with the result.

Watt and Saadi (even from one brief showing) could be a big hit - Mason and AN Other will never work. If practically giving away Mason in January would enable us to get somebody else in (box to box competitive midfielder) then we need to do it. He seems to have made no progress in two years, maybe it's to do with the injuries he has had. Besides the fact that Fabio is constantly out of position (relying on others to fill in) there's not too much wrong with the rest of the team. (I know - we have to keep Fabio in the team to entertain the folk who like to see a player running round a lot).
Apart from the negative griping of the fans and media (even when we win) Mason has been the worst part of most match day experiences since the end of September. Any money offer would do for Mason, please - but I think there's more chance of me shoving a half-pound of butter up a porcupine's backside using a hot needle. We're probably stuck with him till his contract is up, unless another club will take him on loan. (Doubtful if they have had him watched recently. Pity, as using Jones and Mason's wages combined we would be able to get a half-decent player on loan ourselves).
