Joe Mason wants strike partnership with Tony Watt
BBC SPORT
03/01/2016
Cardiff City striker Joe Mason believes he can build an effective partnership with fellow forward Tony Watt.
The Bluebirds are understood to be confident of securing a permanent deal for Watt, who is on loan from Charlton.
And Mason - who scored the only goal in Saturday's 1-0 home win over Blackburn - wants the 22-year-old former Celtic and Standard Liege striker to stay.
"I won't lie, I didn't know too much about him. He took me by surprise a bit, how well he has done," Mason said.
"We are quite similar. He's a better ball carrier than I am - I'm more about getting into space and turns.
"There's no reason why we can't play together. We just need to, as a team, work out how to get the best out of us."
The pair combined up front on Saturday after Kenwyne Jones was dropped, with manager Russell Slade revealing that Jones is in talks with a foreign club.
It was Mason's first start since 21 November and the club's new top scorer believes he is a better player for his time out of the first team.
"Obviously its frustrating being out the team but I can see why I was. I wasn't playing well enough at the time," Mason added.
"It's given me a chance to take a step back and really try and win my place again."

He's got no chance. Russ wants the big man / small man combo he stated this yesterday.

f**k big man little man combo. Id go for two pacy dynamic strikers like saadi and watt ha and saadi is known as the bull he got power and strength too so he can give us the physicality. I dont see the point in signing a big striker for the sake of it to just win headers and is shit in other areas, a striker with a better all round game is what we need

Its going to be difficult to establish himself in the team playing like he has these last 2-3 months baring his tap in on Saturday he has been awful, I would most probably wait to the summer and try and get rid of him as well as macheda and if we don't get rid of revel I would sell him too, we need a striker clear-out and start building it up again. I expect tony watt, saadi, eoin doyle, a target man ( I think it could be Atdhe Nuhiu if we are after a European target man who is playing in the Uk, this would be a deal of a minimal fee similar to lee peltier and saadi) and another striker who I think could be hal robson kanu in the summer as he is available on a free and I don't think he is going to sign a new deal at reading because of a lack of playing time. So if this proves right our strike force going into next season will be:
1. Tony Watt
2. Saadi
3. Nuhiu
4. doyle
5. hal robson kanu

Mason has had his chance, if he gave half as much effort as Watt I would be happy, his lack of effort and work rate in the games he has played of late was nothing short of shocking.
AS for his goal yesterday my granny would of tucked that away.
Let's hope Slade brings in grafters and players willing to die for the cause.

Try Watt and Saadi.

The thing is, do we need another striker?
Watt is obviously our number 1 striker now and hopefully a deal can be sorted with Charlton to sign him permanently, we can all see that he's a top Championship player and he's only just turned 22.
That leaves us with Saadi, Mason, Macheda and Revell. From the very little we saw of Saadi he looks very promising, hopefully he will come in when he's back from injury but we will have to wait and see with that one. We also have Le Fondre and Doyle out on loan but I imagine they'll both leave at the end of the season with Revell.
If we buy a new striker it's almost guaranteed that we lose Mason or Macheda (most likely the latter), and if Saadi comes back to be a top player that will be yet another new striker to rot on the bench. All of this assuming that Watt signs.
I just want McCormack, Chopra and Bothroyd back. Those were the days.

Yes those were the days, I like Joe and was pleased he scored against Blackburn, he may get his confidence back now, however i don't think this partership will work.

lets be honest though, Macheda is injury prone and lazy. Revell isnt good enough and we have seen saadi play 15 minutes of football.
we need another striker, someone like bamford would be perfect.

Im just saying what Russ said.
Anyway, lets be honest here, Saadi has been fit for 20 minutes in 4 months and youve gone balls out to make the Saadi / Watt partnership sound like the next Yorke and Cole.

Give Joe a good run in the team, still the best finisher at the club for me
