Our pitch and the growing lights

Sat Jan 02, 2016 10:27 pm

Another lovely one I seen on here is that the pitch is poor because we're cost cutting!!! Classic :laughing6: I went back to the ground at 6 and they were all switched on in full flow so sorry to upset the doom and gloomers!! Maybe they aren't leaving them on long enough hey!! Utter tripe! It's slammed down non stop since October.

Was down costco one evening last week and you could see the glow...

I'm not suprised the pitch is like that either, 7 weeks of almost non stop rain is almost unheard of. My local golf has been closed many times in the last few weeks.

We have already had the reason for it, not enough prep in the summer due to Wales game, plus a heavy couple of months of rain, but forget all that, as a programme seller "in the know" has already told the inner circle that it's down to Tan cutting costs

Down there this morning and can confirm "the lights were on"

Ours is starting to look like Sunday league football pitches. Only the first team used to play on it now everyone does, Rugby world cup, our under 21s, England under 21s and even our poxy women team have been using it.

The thing that baffles me is that we water every game before kick off and at half time even though its been pouring down.

Do Cardiff water the pitch before games even if it's been raining?

The lights may well be being used now, but have they been regularly on over the last few months?

Go past the ground most evenings and the glow lights are always on.

Re: Our pitch and the growing lights

I think the weather hasn't helped much

Re: Our pitch and the growing lights

If the lights have been used regularly then there is a problem elsewhere.

I don't buy the weather argument. The pitch has a modern drainage system. The north-west of England has probably had more rain than South Wales and look how good the Everton pitch still looks and is playing.

dont buy weather arguement? it was blatently obvious from where i was in ninian stand that the pitch was effected by water saturation like brightons looked and others i've seen on tv, just because one looks good doesnt mean weather doesnt effect other pitches? :old:

I had to pick my daughter up from town in the early hours the Sunday before Christmas & the lights were on then. No cost cutting there as far as I'm concerned.

My theory is that we've had unprecedented levels of rainfall and, despite having modern drainage, this hasn't been able to cope. The reason behind this, imo, is that our ground is barely above sea level and as such the surrounding low-level water table would be saturated due to the volume of rain. The water in the drains needs to be able to flow/fall away but can't. Cardiff has been identified as one of the cities that would suffer most with rising sea levels & there has been plenty in the press showing the projected flood areas.

There aren't many grounds that are as close to the sea as ours - the jacks ground is in Landore, which is significantly higher than ours to my knowledge.

Any civil engineers here that could confirm?

pitch is cack - due to the 3 months constant rain ffs! anybody that thinks a pitch will be good in these conditions needs to wake up and smell the coffee!

Havent played any golf for 2 months cos course is saturated so at least we dont have surface water on out pitch

Slade loaned out our best lawn mowers over the summer, and we are now making do with a couple of second hand flymos from Newport.

Rubbish. We've including you have top notch pitches with under water tanks to deal with extreme weather conditions.

Any chance of translating that into English?

Anybody who is worth their salt on the whole www, would pay little attention to anything Brighton has too say. It's quite easy to make judgement whilst he's sitting in the sun fighting ISIS on his inflated mercenary wage. All in his own mind of course!

Back to the pitch scenario, your basically correct. Your stadium from what I can see is on a pretty level plain, so water drainage would be very difficult no matter how good your stadium system may or may not be. Water goes where it wants, we have no control over that, so while your system is draining out the water, the volume of rain we have had means it will simply fill up again continually from the outside. It will never get flooded whilst the draining system is on, but will basically remain saturated.
That's why the Liberty Stadium can disperse the water more easily, despite it being close to the Tawe, it's beneficial as the River is and always will be much lower than the stadium, therefore it acts as it's drainage.
We'll still go down tho! :laughing6:
