Pilkington: "pitch difficult to play on"

Thu Dec 31, 2015 11:18 am

Cardiff City winger Anthony Pilkington says the state of the club's home pitch is contributing to "sloppy" play.

The 27-year-old believes the turf at Cardiff City Stadium - which hosted all of Wales' home fixtures in Euro 2016 qualifying - is cutting up.
"The pitch was a bit difficult to play on," said Pilkington, 27, after the Bluebirds' 1-1 draw at home to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
"We like to get the ball down and play and then carve teams open."
The Cardiff City Stadium pitch was criticised after Wales' 3-2 friendly loss to the Netherlands on 13 November.

Cardiff enjoyed the majority of possession and territory in their Championship match against Forest but only converted one of their 16 efforts on goal.
"There was a bit of sloppy play, which probably you would expect on a pitch like that," Pilkington added.
The Bluebirds host Blackburn in the Championship on Saturday before a home FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury on Sunday, 10 January.

Footballers will use any excuse they can find to mask their own inadequacies.

There was nothing wrong with the pitches at Birmingham and Milton Keynes.

How did we get on in those games?

Just been watching "The Big Match Revisited" from 1979 - those pitches were bad. No grass, all mud and yet the players managed to get on with it without moaning.

What they play on now, even our pitch, is like a snooker table in comparison.

So is a cabbage patch the same for both teams to play on but if you train on a good surface or like to try and play the ball on the floor it is going to spoil the game and cause passes to be misplaced or balls to be miscontrolled. The surface has been poor for a while now and I'm surprised that only lately this has been mentioned publicly. It would be nice if someone from the Club made a comment as to why the pitch is so poor this season in comparison to the last few seasons. I know that Phil Williams the head groundsman retired towards the end of last season but as Wayne Nash is a former groundsman you would think he'd ensure they brought in an adequate replacement. Unless we sort the pitch out it could cost us future Wales games now the Millstad has a desso pitch and the special lights. :bluescarf:

Must explain why we're carving teams open away and not at home then :s

He has a point, our pitch was one of the best around until this season, for some reason it's absolutely rubbish. More cost cutting?

Doesn't excuse missing a hat trick of headed chances in the past 3 games either. The chance against Forest in the first 5 minutes was almost harder to miss. Maybe instead of moaning about the pitch a little heading practise might be a better use of time?

Maybe he should concentrate on staying on the wing and helping Fabio out instead of blaming pitch :ayatollah:

It looks a good pitch to me, it is obviously slippery at the moment because it's been raining for about three months solid, but as people have said above its the same for both teams, and we are far more used to it than every other team, so get on with it and stop making excuses !!!!

All Pilkington said was that the pitch wasn't great at present - which it isn't. Seems to me that some of the posters on here are making more of it than he was. Reality is it should be better. Anyone who thinks its ok needs to borrow my specs.

The pitch is awful. It's cutting up bad just in warm ups.

We'll never play decent football on a surface like this.
