The Pitch has been awful for months

What on earth is wrong with the pitch at the Cardiff City Stadium?

By Steve Tucker

31/12/15

The surface looked dreadful, cutting up at every step and with large patches of mud. Even down the flanks the condition was very poor.

The playing surface in the Welsh capital used to be second to none. The club has invested on lights to treat the pitch after games, but right now it looks an awful mess. A number of opposition mangers have already commented on it recently.

It is hardly as if the weather has been terrible this winter so far, it has been pretty mild in fact. OK, there has been some rain, but surely not enough to make surface as bad as it is. People complain about the Bluebirds not indulging in the passing game enough, but what can you do on a surface like that?

It has deteriorated over the last season and it looks like a problem pitch to play on.

The mud patches in some areas are embarrassing and the club needs to address this. I know we are having cut backs but if this is part of it then the club needs to look elsewhere.

In my opinion cut backs.

Some on here said don't be daft, its the rain, well MK Dons was perfect and all the other Championship clubs pitches have been good.

I'm starting believe it's the culture that's now been allowed to develop at our club. Yes, the weather for one thing with the pitch but i recall Peter Ridsdale saying it's the most advanced pitch you can get. So, brings me to my first point, do the grounds people care as much as they used to. And i feel this from the brilliant guys in the ticket office to the people handing me a hot dog and beer. There seems to be a feeling of this is the worst place in the World to work at the minute.

According to Nathan Blake on his Boot Room show they didn't' do the necessary work in the summer. I think they have said that the late Wales match prevented it but I don't believe that. Looks like cost cutting to me.

I have thought that the pitch has been looking poor for a while, In the past I have always thought our pitch was one of the best in the country IMO...

I remember doing my work experience as a grounds man at Ninian park back in 97/98. And remember thinking back then how good the playing surface was!

So to see it in its current state is strange, I am guessing more money is spent on the up keep of the pitch now compared to back then...

The pitch is usually taken up and relayed every November. This year it hasnt

Re: " What on earth is wrong? "

The poor pitch is all due to the Wales vs Belgium game on the 12 of June

This game meant that the pitch couldn't be relayed in the off-season ( I know our pitch is artificial but they still do need relaying at the end of every season )

I believe Slade said this in a press conference a few weeks back

Why November? Would have thought sumer time is best?

Due to the Welsh international taking place in June the pitch had to be reseeded before that. However not all the rquired work was possible in the shortened timeframe hence the present problems.

Annis, I spoke to the head groundsman before the game about the quality of the pitch. He is frustrated because it is as a result of not being able to completely remove the surface in the summer due to the Wales games. This summer apparently there are a couple of concerts early on and then they are going to completely renew the surface.
Good to see you again in the Sand Martin

Typical of the negative attitude that has been peddled by the mouthy minority on here, you would prefer to blame cost cutting and ignore the fact that the pitch was used for extra games in the summer for the first time and the pitch hasn't had its usual recovery time. Another opportunity to blame Tan for something he has no involvement in

The weather s hardly been bad ????? It's been the wettest winter on record ,think of all the number of storms we've had just recently it's hardly surprising that the pitch us going to be not as good as previous season I thought the pitch was better on Tuesday than the last game if it's raining you can't use heavy machinery on the the pitch it will just cut up and leave tyre marks ,a good break in the weather and it will be better

I did not post to be negative but to provide a possible explanation for the state of the pitch.. Unlike many on here I am not violently anti- Tan and fully support the long overdue cost cutting that is going on. It should have happened in the summer after our relegation.

But it would be interesting if someone could explain why the Bon Jovi concert on 12th June 2013 didn't prevent the preparation of a good pitch for the next season while the Wales game on 12th June 2015 seemingly did. There may well be a logical explanation but I know nothing about pitch preparation and have no idea what it might be.

I promise you this, in fact I guarantee you Wez, theres been major cut back down at the Stadium

Re: " What on earth is wrong? "

Wez,
Funny story is they had full staff on in the Ticket office for tickets for Blackburn Rovers and I and one other person was in there, he was buying Shrewsbury tickets, the rest were twiddling their thumbs, so no fans can complain there if they wanted tickets.

It's always been a mint pitch, it was even better than this year when the blues were here if I remeber correctly.

Sounded negative to me, blaming cost cutting, when you have been given a perfectly plausible explanation which is more to do with time constraints than anything else
