' A tale of two strikers '

By Steve Tucker

28/12/15

It really was chalk and cheese when it came to the Bluebirds’ frontline at Stadium MK. Tony Watt has proved a revelation since arriving from Charlton on loan last month

There are the two goals in six league games of course, but Watt has brought much more than that. His directness, alertness and the danger he supplies has given something new and much needed. This, despite despite the plethora of strikers who have joined the club in recent times.

Against the Dons, particularly first-half, it was a joy to see Watt run at the hone defence. Not meaningless action in non-dangerous areas either, but hurtful, decisive stuff which created chances.

Kenwyne Jones, on the other hand, cut a frustrating figure for the Bluebirds. His quality is proven and he has his moments, the recent brace in the win over Brentford a case in point.

Tony Watt of Cardiff on the attackTony Watt was one of the bright lights during a gloomy Bluebirds' defeat
But Jones is simply not turning up and delivering enough. Of course, there is no pressure on him at the club. The only likely replacement as target man, Alex Revell, has proved unfit for purpose at this level, in the eyes of some fans.

However, those who say handing a new contract to Jones is a waste of time will have seen their case strengthened again here.

Jones is a luxury we cannot afford.

City supporters love to see a bit of sweat however the quickest I have seen Jones move is into his seat in First class seat on the way to Trineeeedad and Tobagooooooooooo :bluescarf:

Will not be a great loss and should be treated the same way Guerra was (who didn't get a chance) :sladeout:

At the moment I would pick Ravell over Jones, both not scoring but at least Ravell will show a bit of passion!!!

A can't be arsed Jones is 10 times better than Revell. Revell cannot play football at this level, come to think of it, he couldn't get into a League One side either, so what does that tell you?

Get another target man in the Jan window that can actually bring others into play and get a few as well then maybe we can talk about bombing out Jones, until then I'd keep him up top.

Also Saadi supposed to be decent in the air and looks a player as well, maybe him and Watt could work? Hopefully we will see him in the match day squad soon.

my only concern about watt at this point is sometimes he runs a bit too much, he does a good job most of the time but if it starts making the other guys complacent they won't be getting into decent positions. That said though I love him and glad he's doing well, long may it continue.

He seems to help the midfield a lot by tracking back but when we win the ball there's no outlet apart from KJ and we have to slow the play down. Would love to see a pacy striker alongside watt who can hold the ball up well enough but who's main threat is to run in behind.

Looking at Watt I think he would be great in the number 10 role, he loves to have the ball at his feet and to run at defenders and dropping him a little deeper will allow him extra space to do this. He is also able to pick a pass and link up with the other striker. Wish we could mix Macheda and Revell because Macheda with Revells work rate would be a quality striker (wouldn't be with us)

I'm a firm believer that Kenwyne could finish top goal scorer if we change out tactics, we have the right striker to play a 4-5-1 with Whitts in a free role behind the striker, if we could adopt the Swansea style Kenwyne would fit into it perfectly

Agree Jones is by far a better player than Revell, but I'm sorry if a player can't be bothered to put some effort in I would drop him - simple as !As perhaps as poor footballing wise Revell is he always puts a shift in.

I don't get what this kenwyne jones is a luxury we cant afford is all about I think some fans have become obsessed with this cost cutting and what it means. Cost Cutting is not about having a fire sale on all our first team players. For me unless a player has asked to leave or lets his contract has run out than we should not even be contemplating selling any of our players from our 20 man squad and kenwyne jones is a big part of that 20 man squad. Cost cutting would be selling players like Dikagcoi, macheda, mason, Turner players who have essentially been bombed out of the squad whose wages are still high and there are opportunities like bringing in a josh vela for 450k from Bolton who would be on a lower wage than than dikagcoi but who is arguably a better and younger player than dikagoci, or bringing in a tony watt and offloading mason for more money that's cost cutting done propely not getting rid of our first 11 players just because they are on a high wage. I for one will be hoping that kenwyne jones puts pen to paper and signs a new deal with us.

37k a week for what he gives :o

You are either on drugs or have a dog with a stick.

I wish I could get what he does, at least I would be value for money.

Appears the club think the same as they are offering him far less :ayatollah:

First off......I never said leave watt out, I said Kenwyne in a 451, I'm pretty sure there's 9 other positions apart from the goalkeeper that's available, don't worry it's more than 1 player that can play.

Secondly watts on loan, there's nothing stopping their manager in January saying, okay maybe we won't sell him, maybe we should keep him. Where does that leave us then ? You would leave out jones for someone who's not at the club

Thirdly I said im firm believer just my opinion. And in that opinion I believe we could be a much better team than we are right now.
