Cardiff City boss Russell Slade admits failure to take chances is becoming serious issue

26 Dec 2015

By Steve Tucker

Slade was left deeply frustrated by Cardiff's failure to convert opportunities and another lacklustre display at the back.

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade was left deeply frustrated by his side’s finishing as they dominated against MK Dons but eventually lost out at the Championship strugglers in a Boxing Day calamity.

The Bluebirds could have won the game by haf-time as they wasted chance after chance and were then punished early in the second period when former Bluebird Nicky Maynard scored for the home side. Despite getting level through substitute Craig Noone Cardiff were sunk by a late strike from Josh Murphy, to slip four points off the play-off places.

“It was not what we expected,” admitted Slade.

“We started the game really well, it was a strong first-half performance from us. We just lacked the goals in the first period. We’ve looked at a few of the opportunities we had and really we should have been taking them or there is a final decision, a final ball, that slides someone in. We’ve not done that.

“We played with great confidence in our build-up to create the chances, to get in the final third, but we’ve not punished them. It is an issue I guess, in that if you are creating those kind of chances away from home, then you have got to be scoring from them and we drew a blank in the first period. That was frustrating.

Aron Gunarsson and Kenwyne Jones have words after MK Dons' winning goal

“We got back in the game and we looked in control once more, but it was one long ball and we’ve just not done defensively well enough there. You have to make the right decisions.”

Slade said he will now be working with his strikers to try to ensure more of the chances created actually being converted, but he admitted leaking goals was not helping matters at all either.

“We will look at what we are doing on the training ground,” said Slade.

“We are looking at the situations and recreating them to give the players the chance to finish them, but saying all that it is really about doing it in a competitive game in the Championship.

“Our last two performances away from home we have not got anything, but in terms of performance they have been decent. There’s something just not quite there at the minute that we need to change and that we are capable of changing. We feel we have the firepower and quality to change things.

“But whilst we are not finishing as well as we should be we cannot be letting in two goals at the same time. It is very frustrating. We have to stay in control.”

Tony Watt of Cardiff just fails to connect with a cross

One player who again impressed was striker Tony Watt, whose loan spell from Charlton ends on January 16. Slade gave his clearest indication yet, he aimed to sign the frontman permanently.

Slade added: “It says everything when we are playing Tony week in and week out. He’s enjoying his football with us, he’s a threat, he’s settled in well, he’s linking up well and on another day he is one of those who could have scored. There is an on-going dialogue and a possibility of signing him in January.”

None of that is bullshit? He's right. We were by far the better team but didn't convert chances. If u can tell accept him coming out and telling the truth then u r just being stubborn.

It's not Boxing you don't judge at the end who was the better team.

He doesn't even pick a bench where he can make changes. A goal keeper, a defender and 3 defensive midfielders. :sladeout:

Ryan, We did play well, but we actually never put their goalie under that much pressure, same away to Brum.

But we were set up the wrong way like at Brum Ameobi and Jones should never start again.

We played well in the first half, rem against a team who had won 2 of their previous 21 games

But not in the second half yet again Annis the only positive is that Noone seems to be picking up a bit Jones and Ameobi make us look like 9 men they are that ineffective drop them and we have a chance of winning a game.

Kenwyne Jones is what is costing us up front.

Today we created the chances that needed that surge up front to finish off the moves. Jones was no where about when the chances were coming in. Unlike Watts who was busting a gut to get to the ball.

And Ameobi a wasted position out wide.

In fairness to Ameobi he created a couple of chances down the right in the first half. Second half he was none existent.

There are no positives from the last two games. We lost them both, when we should have won them both. Simple as that.

We will struggle to win games with Jones and Ameobi starting we haven't won a game with these two in the team.

It is easy telling the truth. "we should have scored more goals" No shit Sherlock! But we also should have adjusted, made some changes, taken control and walked all over them. But as usual he takes NO responsibility for that. After all, it was the failure to score goals that lost the game

why should he bust a gut for us the way fans treat him? Fans shouting abuse at him constantly and most likely he and the players look at the forum and I bet when they look at it they will be thinking why should they put in a shift when all our fans do is never praise just constantly put down.dont blame Jones one bit for his lack of enthusiasm and drive.remember what he done for us since he's been here instead of looking what he could've done.
