The story of the game

MK DONS 2 CARDIFF CITY 1

Cardiff City well and truly endured the Boxing Day Blues as they sank to a dreadful defeat at struggling MK Dons.

Russell Slade’s men dominated for long stretches here, particularly in the first-half, but just could not find the finish. Aron Gunnarsson, Scott Malone and Sammy Ameobi all might have found the net in a wasteful first period that was to cost the visitors dear.

Because at the start of the second-half, totally against what had been witnessed before, former Cardiff frontman Nicky Maynard fired home a lovely opening goal. The Bluebirds were rocked by the shock reverse, but got back level thanks to a beautiful goal on 80 minutes from substitute Craig Noone. The wideman buried a left-foot shot right in the top-corner.

But Slade’s misery was complete right on the stroke of full-time when poor defending saw Josh Murphy fire home from close range to help ease the Dons’ relegation worries.

But it meant a result which deals the Bluebirds’ play-off hopes a big blow as they are set four points adrift from the top six.
