Fresh from their playoff frustration last season, Middlesbrough have kicked on this term and are making a real push for automatic promotion.
Aitor Karanka's men sit top of the Championship at Christmas, two points ahead of Derby, and have won seven of their last nine league games.
Karanka won't want to upset the squad too much and fans should not expect too many arrivals.
However, the club are thought to be considering a £500,000 bid for Bolton midfielder Mark Davies in an effort to bolster their ranks.
Davies, a £1m acquisition from Wolves in 2009, has been a regular in Bolton boss Neil Lennon's XI this season.
But the cash-strapped club need money fast - they face a winding up order if they cannot find £600,000 in unpaid taxes and have running costs of £900,000 a month.
Davies' sale would go some way to keeping the club alive through January, although relegation for Bolton would almost be nailed on if it sparks a squad fire sale.
