' Ian Holloway questioned Kenwyne Jones' desire after disappointing display against Birmingham '
18/12/15
BY MATTHEW SOUTHCOMBE
The striker was relatively anonymous as the Bluebirds suffered their first defeat in four matches.
Sky Sports pundit Ian Holloway was left wondering about how much Kenwyne Jones wanted it after he looked off the pace against Birmingham.
Jones meandered around the pitch at St Andrew's as the game passed him by, with Tony Watt always looking the more likely of the two.
The 31-year-old did little of note, other than a header on target in the first half, as he was caught on his heels in the box with chances going begging.
After the match, Holloway admitted that he was disappointed by what he saw.
"To be honest I'm disappointed. You've got to get people in the box, you've got to have the desire to want to get there and for me Kenwyne's got to do more," he said.
"I thought Watt was up there, he floated, he did all sorts of things and it didn't look like it mattered enough and that's how I felt.
"I'm sorry, he's a good lad, but I've got to say it how I see it. I don't think he did enough."
The club and Jones are currently locked in negotiations over a new contract, with the Bluebirds insisting he takes a pay cut.
He is currently earning £35,000-a-week and Russell Slade recently admitted that, whilst he wants the striker to stay, the decision is out of his hands.
Jones scored two goals against Brentford on Tuesday night, including the winner but didn't celebrate the goals.

i guess our offer wasn't what KJ wanted. When was the last time he was unplayable ?
I can't remember any either....

Truly can't justify £35 a week let alone £35000.
Lazy beyond belief.

If Jones was a racehorse and slade was his trainer he would be in front of the stewards for non trying probably would get fined and banned for a few weeks but unfortunately he's not,he's a overpaid over hyped excuses of a footballer who earns more in one week than most earn in one year.sorry in my eyes he should never wear the shirt again get rid bring in another forward with tony watts desire and work rate I'm sure we could make the playoffs.

Jones wouldve played for a top side in the Prem if he had the work ethic but he lets himself down.

I think every club KJ has been at has left the fans feeling the same. He can score the odd goal on his day, but has that laid back lazy uninterested attitude. If he leaves city I can't see him getting another big pay day at a club in the UK, he will have to go abroad to a low standard league in the States or Asia

Well said - he is purely in it for the money - he is not remotely interested in Cardiff City - makes Bothroyd look energetic!

He was appalling tonight Mugs but he has got us out of jail on occasions. In my opinion best as an impact player.

Might be the best way to play him - bring him on for the last 15/20 minutes - if his enthusiasm was as good as his actual ability, he would be a real asset to the club.

Because he's not that good. At the top of his game (which he kept up for less than half a season) he was one goal in three games.
Simply not consistent enough. Saying if he had the work ethic is like saying if I had the ability of Pele I'd be a premiership player.

If Jones didn't have a laid back attitude he would played for a big team no doubt.

Very much agree. It's galling to see his indifference. If he had the heart of a lion he'd rip this division to shreds.

Just got home from Birmingham after a great trip on Carlos coaches, absolutely gutted with the result, but also the lack of effort we see from KJ. It's embarrassing to watch when you see the effort Watt puts in, he must look at Jones and think, my god the blokes on double my wages and put such little effort in.
We shouldn't have gone in 1-0 down we had chances to score, whether it was a pen or not Marshall should have coped with the initial ball, so despite the result our main fault was the final ball.
In all honesty we have played worse this season and got something out of the game.
By the way this is my first post ever, Happy Xmas everyone

I hope Jones is gone in January the sooner the better ,
Watt was on his own up front trying to make things happen and when he carried the ball into the penalty area and squaring it Jones was nowhere , he hardly broke sweat and don't deserve another contract
It can't be good for moral to see someone on very high wages for so little effort when others are busting a gut
He has his strengths mainly in the air but his desire is woeful

That performance was the straw the broke the donkeys back. Unjustifiable that lack of movement in the box
Sat Dec 19, 2015 7:43 am
He needs a kick up the arse that performance was disgusting, and he needs to get his mop cut, if he did run that hair would get in the way and make it difficult when heading.
Surely as a proffesional footballer with a short career, maximum effort and performance should come before fashion and how you look ? It just shows he doesn't really care IMO....

If he was a 30 goal a season man then he could possibly get away with his laziness but he's not. I can't stand lack of effort in the City top so he can do one. Disgraceful that he even signed on those wages in the first place!
Sat Dec 19, 2015 8:59 am
Hes f*cking shite get rid ASAP

This is the point I made in a quote on another thread.
Premiership Strikers should score 20-30 goals in this division. If they dont then they are not Premiership Strikers.

Must of seen a different game.. I saw a Jones tracking back, trying to find space and to move. But most importantly of all, if you guys can't see he was instructed to drop deep and pick up you must be blind! And he was feeding on scraps. Every ball, a bad pass. The final third was absolutely crap, and so was Jones at the end of it.
But to blame him is ridiculous.. The hole game was like watching paint dry again. Absolutely shit and league one stuff. I am very disappointed after hearing we playd some good stuff. Now I'm left thinking it's the fans standard who is slipping..
Sat Dec 19, 2015 9:58 am
Jones was poor he shows no desire whatsoever he should have got us at least a point but the guy has got other things on his mind. After all he is our centre forward our top wage earner yes he did make a few runs but he's just trying to fool the fans in thinking the efforts there, every time I go and watch city I think I hope kj turns up today should I really be thinking that after all he is a professional football player.i like many other city fans think kj should be ripping this division up but I think I'm fooling myself.

Holloway is totally right about jones, for his reported £35,000 a week he is stealing money from the club, his goals return for us is average at best and his work rate is shocking, Watt has only been here two minutes and is already showing a great attitude which puts jones to shame.

I have changed my opinion many times on kj, we all accept he is never going to be that mobile, doesn't suit a 442 setup, but just standing there not bothering to get into goalscoring positions on the few times we looked like scoring is so poor.

I was not at the game last night but like most watched on TV, so what I seen of Jones was no different to most of his games since he has been here. He tracked back a few times (though not too much) was good defending at corners (his pressence at the near post forced longer balls in), but he has always had a languid style of play and little determination at every club he has been at!!
The difference of late is Watt with his all action run at defenders approach, compared with Jones, Macheda and Mason who are back to the defender style of strikers with no pace. Any of our forwards on the pitch along side Watt will appear lazy or not working hard enough so I think it is a little unfair of 'some' of the critisism aimed at Jones.
He has done himself NO favours at all with that performance last night, if he thought by that performance he would have clubs lining up to sign him in January he is misguided or deluded.
We should be offering him an incentive based contract with a low basic salary ( say 5-8 grand), 5 grand per goal he scores along with the normal squad bonuses for wins league position etc. So the harder he works, the more he gets.
Take it or leave it Kenwyne!!!!!!
