Sammy Ameobi was left red-faced after missing a glorious opportunity to equalise but pulled his shot well wide of the Birmingham goal before Jonathan Spector struck his own post as Cardiff pushed for a leveller.
Despite Cardiff's best efforts, they struggled to break down the Blues defence but will feel they deserved more from the game.
