Birmingham City Vs Cardiff City: Opposition View
As the Bluebirds prepare to take on the Blues in front of the Sky Sports cameras, we spoke to Birmingham City supporter Dylan Davies to find out the view from the Midlands before Friday nights clash at St Andrews.
Dylan Davies is a life-long Blues fan and we wanted to find out about the current mood in the Birmingham fan-base ahead of Friday’s battle between two play-off contenders.
How do you view Birmingham City’s season so far?
I believe overall that we have surpassed expectations, I would have taken our current position at Christmas easily. We have a thin squad and for us to be up where we are with our current financial constraints is fantastic.
We have a fighting team spirit and I think we will finish in or around the play off’s, between 6th-10th. Gary Rowett has recently been linked to the Fulham vacancy and he has shown fantastic professionalism and discipline in the way he has conducted himself throughout the speculation.
Since he’s joined he’s been a breath of fresh air, since his first game last season against Watford at home, to our game Friday against Cardiff. We are playing well this season, but sometimes we need to finish our chances more often.
What player do you view as Birmingham’s biggest threat? who is your key man?
Clayton Donaldson is out injured at the moment and his hold up play has been a massive miss in creating chances, but I would say
Cardiff will have to keep a special eye on Demarai Grey Friday.
He has recently been playing well but has wasted a few chances, a recent example of this was our 1-1 Draw at Preston on Tuesday night.
From our second half performance we should have got the three points, Grey wasted a close chance to secure the points in the 90th minute. He’ll be extra motivated to get a goal against Cardiff.
Who’s Cardiff’s biggest threat? what player do you need to keep quiet on Friday?
I would say Cardiff’s biggest threat is Tony Watt, he has been scoring goals recently and his overall performances for Cardiff have brought a much lifted boost to the team. I think our defence need to stop him from getting as many chances as possible.
You’re struggling at home at the moment, what’s going wrong? is it bad luck or is there improvement needed?
Our home form is in a strange situation, our lads seem to be under a lot of pressure this season to perform at home. It’s especially strange when our home form last season was a catalyst to Gary Rowett’s success at the club and revolution of the squad left by Lee Clark.
I think there have been some bad individual performances at home and some general bad luck. I do believe it’s only a matter of time before our home form matches our away form once again.
Where do you think Birmingham will finish this season and why?
We have a squad that will fight till the end, we some fantastic hard-working players that have cost us next to nothing to bring in. We have some potential in our youngsters most notably Demarai Grey and more recently Viv Solomon-Otabor, which bring something different to our team.
This goes hand in hand with the experienced players we have, notably being Clayton Donaldson and David Cotterill, who have both been missed due to injury. We have players like Paul Caddis and Jonathan Grounds, who are solid options in defence, but can have off days.
Our biggest strength is self belief, our weakness is probably not finishing enough chances on goal. Hopefully the acquisition of signing Huddersfield striker James Vaughan may change things.
I think we have a great chance of getting into the play off’s, but if I’m being totally honest I think we’ll just miss out and finish in the top 10.
Where do you think Cardiff will finish this season and why?
I think Cardiff are in a similar predicament to us, Cardiff seem to struggle at home or struggle to at least win at home comfortably. This is seen in recent home games against Burnley and Brentford. I feel Cardiff will just miss out on the play off’s due to this factor.
I get the impression from the outside that Cardiff seem to either play really well or really bad and can be very inconsistent. This will cost them a place in the play off’s.
How do you view the game going on Friday? and what’s your score prediction?
I think after our current streak we are well over-due a win, with our players motivated to win after a few games without a win I can see us nicking it 1-0 . But it will be a very close game, with both sides looking to continue a push towards securing play off places.
