Cardiff City: Russell Slade praises team's backbone after late win

BBC

16/12/15

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade praised his team's backbone after their nail-biting 3-2 win over Brentford.

The Bluebirds led 2-0 at half-time, but were pegged back to 2-2 before Kenwyne Jones clinched victory in stoppage time with his second of the night.
"I told them at half time 'there are three bones in life; a wishbone, a funny bone and a backbone'," Slade told BBC Radio Wales.
"It was the last one we had to show, and fortunately we did."

In front of their smallest home crowd of the season of 12,729, Slade's team was roundly booed when John Swift equalised for Brentford with four minutes remaining.

Cardiff had squandered two-goal leads in their previous two home matches, and appeared to be on their way to an unwanted hat-trick before Jones slid in to claim the winner in the third minute of added time.

Slade said he hoped the result marked a turning point.
"It was another really strong first half performance," he said.
"We've been there before [and] we had to wait until it was up until 2-2 before we got the winner which will hopefully be a vital three points going forward."

On his nerves at the end....
They’re okay because I thought we showed great character.

We were 2-0 up and in a similar position to what we have been a few times and to be honest we should have got the third goal which would have erased any fears of Brentford coming back into the game.

It’s disappointing because we’ve created lots of chances to get that third but it’s not happened and – unlike us – we’ve conceded from our corner where our record is very good.

You then saw nervousness in the side that gave Brentford potential to come back into it.

On overcoming a mental barrier...
To go through it twice and look like it’s going to happen again but to come back and get the goal was excellent from my point of view.

We showed great unity and great togetherness to get that winner.

On the scoring run...
We’ve got 12 in our last six, but we are missing the clean sheets now.

I guess you can’t have everything in this game sometimes.

On the importance of the goal as the atmosphere turned...
It’s frustrating for the fans, but it’s frustrating for all of us.

The goal was important to get the win, but also to put this behind us.

We kept going on Saturday and came back into it at 2-2 and had chances to get the winner.

We did that here and it can make a huge difference.

I’m pleased they got over the line, got the three points and it will be massive going into Friday’s game.

Slade has to take the captaincy off Marshall, who incidentally his goalkicking was abysmal last night, either going straight to an opposing centre half or to our smallest forward, with no hope of gaining possession, give the captaincy to an outfield player, who hopefully stop the midfield and defence playing to deeply, which is causing so many problems for us right now,Slade must also sit down with Trollope to discuss how to defend a two goal lead
