Severnside derby defeat at Ashton Gate in third round tie.

Bristol City have been knocked out of the FA Youth Cup at the third round stage following a 4-0 defeat at home to Severnside derby rivals Cardiff City.

Most of the damage was done after half-time, although the Bluebirds were the dominant force during a first period where they took the lead through Jamie Bird’s deflected effort.

After the interval Lloyd Humphris fired a brace and Ibrahim Sosani added a fourth to send the Bluebirds safely into round four, where they will meet either Liverpool or Ipswich Town.

Cardiff started well and saw strong shots for a penalty waved away early on when Aaron Parsons slid in to end Bird’s dash into the box.

Moments later Mark Harris cut in from the right flank unchallenged and forced City stopper Tyler Edmund into a smart save, pushing a driven shot over the top.

City enjoyed brief respite when George Kellow advanced to warm the gloves of Cardiff keeper Luke Wakeman with a low 25-yard drive.

But the Bluebirds broke the deadlock on 13 minutes. Given time and space 25 yards out, Bird sent a bouncing shot beyond Edmund via a wicked deflection off Parsons.

Cardiff could have extended their lead on the half-hour when Humphris’ corner was headed goalwards by Rollin Menayese. Just yards from goal Cameron Coxe tried to help the ball over the line but Edmunds palmed the ball clear from his goal-line.

On the stroke of half-time Harris found himself through on goal twice in the space of 60 seconds, but Edmunds came to City’s rescue on both occasions.

City would have been hoping for better after the break but found themselves 2-0 down within moments of the restart.

With Edmunds out of position, Harris turned provider by cutting the ball back for Humphris to curl a brilliant first-time shot from 25 yards.

Kellow had to stay alert to head Shane Parry’s goalbound header off the line. And from the resulting corner Parry again met the ball with his head and floated an effort against the bar, before watching City hack clear to safety.

Ibrahim Sosani should have sealed victory for the visitors when left free in the penalty area eight yards out, but the striker’s driven effort crashed back off the legs of Edmunds.

Humphris did make sure, however, with 14 minutes to play, thrashing home from six yards after City failed to clear a corner kick.

Seconds later Humphris crossed to provide Sosani with a simple tap-in from just yards out, completing the rout.

City Under-18s: Edmunds, Edwards (Nurse 56), Parsons, Harris, Moss, Harper, Dowling, Morton, Richards (Difford 49), Andrews, Kellow (Spalding 66). Subs not used: Reeves, McNulty.

City Under-18s host their Severnside derby rivals Cardiff City at Ashton Gate this evening (7pm) in the FA Youth Cup third round.

Shaun Brooks’ side will be hoping to exact revenge on their opponents, having lost 3-1 in South Wales earlier this month.

They also have the added incentive of a potential away tie at Liverpool in round four should they be successful tonight.

Under-18 coach Brooks told bcfc.co.uk: "It's a wonderful opportunity for all the players who will be involved this evening. Playing at Ashton Gate is what we want these boys to do many more times in their careers.

"It's the one game everyone has been talking about since the draw was made and one where the result is more meaningful than your usual Saturday fixture.

"Our excitement is tinged with a bit of disappointment for those who are missing out tonight, either through a lack of fitness or other reasons. We're without Harvey Smith because of concussion he suffered recently, but we're boosted by the Under-21s who will drop down.

"However, it will be a tough game because Cardiff are strong; they've beaten us at Under-18 and Under-21 level recently."

Liverpool, who play their home games at St Helens Langtree Park rather than Anfield, will play Ipswich Town on Wednesday, and already know they will host the winners of tonight’s fixture.

The tie must be decided tonight, there will be no replay. Should the scores remain level at 90 minutes, extra time and then penalty kicks will be used to determine the winner.

Only the South Stand will be open to supporters this evening, with entry prices set at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.

The boys dominated them from start to finish. Good to hear Cardiff cheers coming from sections of the 500 or so who were there as well. :thumbright:
