Tom Elliott has sympathy for goalkeeper Ben Wilson after costly Stevenage error

14/12/2015

Tom Elliott has sympathy for goalkeeper Ben Wilson after his error cost AFC Wimbledon against Stevenage on Saturday.

The on-loan Cardiff City starlet allowed Jerome Okimo’s free-kick from inside his own half bounce over his head to seal at 2-1 victory for Teddy Sheringham’s side .

It was a shaky afternoon for the youngster after he made a number of questionable decisions but striker Elliott says mistakes are magnified at the other end of the field.

He said: “I’ve never been involved in a game with a goal like that but we’ve all seen them before. I was stood next to him when he took it and there was a massive gust of wind.

“It took an awkward bounce and it’s gone in but Willo [Ben Wilson] is a good keeper. It’s a team thing and it hurts us all. We’ve got to get behind him.

“When you make one mistake as a keeper it is most likely going to be a goal. If you make one at the other end of the pitch then it won’t be as bad.

“It is a hard one for him to take but Ben will learn from this and move onto the next game.”

Ben Wilson returns to Cardiff City after Twitter row with AFC Wimbledon fan

AFC Wimbledon have sent on-loan keeper Ben Wilson back to Cardiff City after he became embroiled in a spat with a fan on Twitter.

The 23-year-old joined the League Two side on an emergency loan in October following an injury to No. 1 James Shea, making eight appearances, but was criticised by some Dons supporters for his performance in the 2-1 defeat to Stevenage at Kingsmeadow on Saturday.

One tweeted him to say: "I'm glad you think it's funny, the teams already got enough c**** who don't care." Wilson replied to the message by saying: "Got enough of them as supporters like you also. You're still paying to watch every week and helping towards my wage, I'm laughing and you're losing out".
In a statement, Wimbledon confirmed that Wilson had returned to Wales, with manager Neal Ardley adding: "I'd like to thank Ben for his commitment while he was here and wish him all the best in his future career."

I hope we release him, we don't want players like him at our club and his behaviour has shown he will never handle playing for us or another bigger club with the amount of criticism our fans happily throw at our players. Can you imagine what Wilson would be like if he made that mistake for us and he got slated by some of us lot on Twitter?

The level of disrespect Wilson has shown to AFC Wimbledon is incredible. Those AFC Wimbledon fans are proud fans who fought a lot harder than we did to save the heritage and identity of their club. Those fans don't deserve to be treated like that and I'm not surprised they've sent Wilson back to us.

I hope we fine him a couple of weeks wages minimum but I really think he should be released after this.

Double edged sword. Everyone makes mistakes no need for the fan to do that. but also he needs to be a role model
