Port Vale owner puts League One club up for sale

10th December 2015

by: Mark Blackburn

Port Vale owner Norman Smurthwaite has announced he won’t be selling the club for any less than £4.25 million.

The announcement comes after Smurthwaite, 50, put the club up for sale whilst live on air on BBC Stoke on Monday following the Valiant’s 2-0 loss to Exeter City in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Speaking to the Stoke Sentinel, Smurthwaite had this to say:

“I have never lost money on a transaction in my adult life and I am not starting now.”

The businessman bought the club and stadium in 2012 for £1.25 million when they were in administration and has since pumped in around £3 million to keep it running.

But it has been a stressful affair for Smurthwaite and he has become disillusioned with being chairman and owner and now wants to sell, revealing it in an radio interview on Monday:

“I think the fairest thing to the club is that, if there is somebody who has the ambition, and maybe has the energy and a team of people instead of me doing it on my own, is to come in and take the club over.

“So, officially from today, the club is up for sale.”

Smurthwaite revealed he has already spent an extra £800,000 this season and after missing out on a home FA Cup tie with Liverpool in the third round next month, the owner said:

“I just feel I have let the club down because I have tried to do everything myself which meant cut costs to put every available penny on to the pitch.

“Clearly that must be wrong because yesterday if the players had put the same amount of effort into playing as I do into paying them every month we would have knocked that club [Exeter] for six.”

Smurthwaite has said he is open to the idea of remaining the owner of the club’s stadium, Vale Park, if a potential buyer cannot afford both the club and ground.

Port Vale are currently in 11th place in Sky Bet League One, just four points off the play-offs.

Vale face a tough match against Scunthorpe United at Vale Park on Saturday, in a match both sides will be eager to win.

Where is self confessed "Valey" Robbie Williams ?

4.25 Million must be peanuts to him but I don't Blame him doing better things with his wealth than pay over rated under performing bunch of prima dona's he may buy !

Same for some of our players - From what I have seen of Watt so far - The type of player who gives all for the cause along with Fabio.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised that Robbie Wiliams bought the club and hired Gary Barlow as his manager. :laughing6:
