REVIEW: Bolton Wanderers 2-3 Cardiff City

Sun Dec 06, 2015 6:29 pm

A five goal thriller was witnessed at the Macron Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as Cardiff City scored three goals for the first time this season.

Goals from Tony Watt, Scott Malone and Anthony Pilkington see Cardiff rise into the play-off places, with Bolton still rooted to the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship table.

It took just 13 minutes for Russell Slade’s side to break the deadlock. Watt, who had a good home debut against Burnley last weekend, picked up the ball 30 yards from the Bolton goal, was given space to turn and fired in off the post to get his first goal in Cardiff colours.

The Bluebirds’ lead on lasted four minutes however. Gary Madine scoring the equaliser for The Trotters. A wonderful 30-yard strike left David Marshall with no chance in the City goal.

Neil Lennon’s side gained some confidence from this and had many a chance to take the lead. Neil Danns was the first was try his luck, with his effort just over the crossbar. Darren Pratley had another shot on target which Marshall saved well.

Just before the half-time whistle, Bolton could have taken the lead with a brilliant string of chances. Ex-Swan Pratley rattled the crossbar, then Liam Feeney was denied once again by Marshall, and the Cardiff defence managed to clear.

Eight minutes after half time Slade’s side took the lead for the second time. Wonderful build-up play resulted in Malone’s shot being brilliantly saved by Ben Amos, but the follow up was bundled in by a combination of Malone and Wanderers defender Dean Moxey.

Lennon switched to more attacking tactics as he brought on Emile Heskey and Stephen Dobbie, and it payed off. Two minutes after those substitutions, Dorian Derive was in the right place at the right time to slot home and level the scores with 15 minutes left.

However, it took nine minutes for Cardiff to re-take the lead once again. Watt found Fabio on the right hand side, his cross was flicked on by Kenwyne Jones and Irishman Pilkington was there to smash his volley home and give The Bluebirds their third of the afternoon.

José was sent off in stoppage time for The Trotters, but Cardiff could not add to the scoreline and managed to hold on and take all three points back to South Wales.
