Lots of bad memories rekindled by yesterdays England game.

Mon Jun 28, 2010 9:40 am

This will be the first time I have posted on this site and after watching the shambles that was England yesterday I thought this would be the right place to get a few things off my chest.

I have watched the Bluebirds for nearly 40 years through thick and thin but I cannot remember feeling so low as I did at 4.50pm on Saturday 22nd May. I remember looking around wembley stadium at our fantastic fans and we nearly all had the same look on our faces, the look that said how on earth have we just lost to this lot.

After watching some of the England fans being interviewd in SA after yesterdays game I saw the same look on many of their faces. With the exception of Charlie Adam I could not think of another Blackpool player that I would want to see in a Bluebird shirt, if you were to ask almost any England fan the same question before yesterdays game what do you think the answer would be, Bastian Schweinsteiger - probably, but not many more.

After the game at Wembley I was left with so many questions I wanted to ask, but of course as mere fans we just have to accept what happens and come back again for more, it will be the same with England.

IMO there are striking similarities in the failure of both CCFC in the playoff final and England in the WC, both are managed by stubborn men who decided to rely on a rigid 4-4-2 system, to make substitutions only intending to change players within the same system even if this meant playing square pegs in round holes. And of course both managers have the same arrogent nature where it is my way of the high way.

No one will doubt that on the day Blackpool were the better team but few will disagree when I say that man for man, with a single exception, we were superior. But we still failed in what was IMO the greatest failure in the last 40 years.

Much has happened at our club since that day and thankfully we now have a regime running the club which will keep us on a even keel financially, but as so many have posted in recent weeks where is the "Football Man" to guide the ship. The only person anywhere near filling that role is DJ, but here is a stubborn and inflexible man whose plan for the coming season will be yet more of the same. This will include spending any amount of money he can get away with, wanting Craig Bellamy is a perfect example of this.

What worries me most about the immediate future for the Bluebirds is that the club does not have someone who will hold him accountable for his performance. DJ is a very well paid manager at Championship level but who is going to be the judge of his performance, not just results on the pitch but things like identifying transfer targets, managing budgets, communication with the media and of course tactics.

After yesterday and all those bad memories it brought back I think our new board have missed a trick in not deciding to change the backroom staff, even if that was by appointing an experienced man as Director Of Football or Football Consultant if you like.

I seem to remember Sam Hamman wanting Lennie Lawrence to stay on in that sort of role after PR appointed DJ, I believe getting someone into that role is more important than signing new players at the moment. I hope the powers that be within the club agree and make it a reality as soon as possible.

You can certainly draw some parallel's between the two games, two dour managers, rigid 4-4-2 formation, key players not performing, massive media hype & build up before the game, & last but not least, what the cost of loosing to club & country is [£££]??? I have said before; "Victory has a thousand fathers, defeat is an orphan"!

I think the relevant point is the emotional feeling of both sets of fans after their relevant games. For me i just felt numb & angry after what i witnessed at Wembley last month, & i could see the same in other peoples faces aswell. When i saw Annis walking down the stairwell after the game he looked outraged, if you know what i mean. :x :(

ALong with all the other 1000's of fans - i don't think shock kicked in for a few days - England will realise the same thing

Numb & Angry - becasue we all know it was a waste of a game that should have been played different - England wasted more than one game tho - imagine having to watch Wembley 3 or 4 times over - lol because thats what the ENgland fans had to endure through this WC tournament!

I was more than angry, Rick I felt evil and hurt by how our team had let us down.I bet many many other loyal fans felt the same.
