U21 Report: Crystal Palace 1-1 Cardiff City

Palace ended their losing run in the U21 Professional Development League 2 as Michael Phillips netted a penalty to earn his side a share of the spoils against Cardiff City.

Cardiff has taken the lead early on through Kadeem Harris but after weathering the storm Gary Issott’s men got back on level terms from the spot when Jacob Berkley-Agyepong was brought down inside the box and Phillips scored his first goal at development level.

It took the visitors just four minutes to get in front when a hopeful punt forward fell to Harris who burst inside from the left and showed great composure to dummy past two defenders before slamming the ball into the bottom corner.

He went close again with a whipped left-footed shot that whistled over a few minutes later but Palace restored parity when Corie Andrews saw an attempt blocked which allowed Luke Dreher a first-time shot, but the midfielder saw that cleared off the line by Tom James.

Andrews then had another chance from close range snuffed out by Luke Wakeman in the Bluebirds goal, before the striker went closer when some neat link-up play between Dreher, Jason Lokilo and Andrews gave the latter a chance but he saw it flick off a defender’s foot and sail over the bar.

Marco Weymans then tested his luck from distance but Kleton Perntreou was equal to his low drive as the hosts went into the break trailing, but that was nearly ended when a goalmouth scramble early in the second half saw Lokilo hook the ball back over his head but Matt Kennedy was on hand to block it on the line again.

Cardiff went straight down the other end and Perntreou did well to prevent Harris from scoring a second as the winger attempt to lift the ball over him, and then Macauley Southam saw a deflected wide spin wide of the mark before the Eagles stopper was forced into action again to deny Eli Phipps from doubling the advantage.

But Palace were handed a way back into the game on 68 minutes when Andrews found Berkley-Agyepong inside the area and he was brought down by James, handing Phillips the chance to convert from 12 yards which he did with aplomb, sending Wakeman the wrong way.

With both sides pressing for a winner, Berkley-Agyepong skied a shot on the turn over before missing the target again after he was found unmarked in the box by Dreher from a free-kick, and in the dying stages Connor Dymond watched a free-kick from 30 yards just go wide as Palace had to settle for a point.

Cardiff: Wakeman, Blaise (Watkins 79), Burridge, James, Abbruzzese (Rees 70), Soutjham, Veale, Weymans, Harris (Bird 60), Phipps, Kennedy. Subs not used: Noor, Baker.

Am undecided on kadeem, didn't see enough of him and it was in tight games where space was at a premium that didn't suit him. I do think had h played Sat instead on nooney he would have at least beat his man once
