Christmas presents

Tue Dec 01, 2015 3:15 pm

I just wondered how much people spend at Xmas? I know some people go crazy and take loans out and others will spend a lot but have saved up all year round. Others will spend smaller amounts. I know it maybe a personal question so you don't have to answer but just curious as to how much people spend in total at Christmas on presents?

I know it depends on size of family and how many Friends etc your buying for. I would like to think I'm sensible and save up so I'm not skint at Xmas. I also don't go mad but then nor does the rest of family.

Also are there any scrooge's on here? Does anyone hate Xmas? I know a family member of mine takes one look at the lights and tree etc and says take it down...what a load of nonsense! Lol

We spend about £1500- 2000 on Xmas but that includes all the members of the family, our friends children and any food, drink etc. We save throughout the year so we don't have too worry about it.

All the money spent over Christmas makes me sick, its become a commercialised money making exercise that bleeds money from people who don't really have the money to spend.
People should spend less on gifts and spend more time and effort getting their families together to sit down and eat and look after each other. A little time for others at this time of year would be nice as well, the elderly and infirm, children in care and those who are less fortunate than most of us.

Couldn't agree more, sometimes the enjoyment of Xmas is overshadowed more than often by the financial pressure of it when really what is important? Materials things or family, friends or who ever your going to spend it with. Also like you mentioned above that so many people are alone at Xmas and don't have any family, friends or love ones, let alone presents. I don't think there is anything wrong with spoiling someone once in a while (especially if you've saved up and worked hard for your money) but I guess we can't forget how lucky some of us are.

Its always been a commercialised money maker since I can remember and that's going back 37 years now. However I remember when my parents would say 'no' to me if they couldn't afford it and what pisses me off is parents who say 'I want my child to have what I couldn't'. As if going into debt is going to teach to child the value of money when he/she gets older!!!!

Well said Denzil. And this Black Friday nonsense on top of the existing over-commercialisation is just shameful.
