FOOTBALL VIOLENCE
Olympiacos players forced to flee pitch as Athens derby with Panathinaikos is called off amid shocking violent scenes

BY AARON FLANNAGAN

Hooligans stormed the pitch after Olympiacos' Alfred Finnbogason was targeted by a flare causing vicious clashes between authorities and fans

The top-of-the-table Greek clash between hosts Panathinaikos and Olympiacos was called off shortly before it was due to start following a spate of violent attacks.

Flares were thrown onto the pitch as riot police and hooligans clashed at the Apostolos Nikolaidis ground making for a tense of hostile environment.

When a flare exploded at the feet of Olympiacos striker Alfred Finnbogason prior to the team's warm-ups, the visiting players fled the pitch for their own safety.

The match official in charge of the Athens derby deemed that the ground was not safe for football following the incident and postponed the match.

Finnbogason was walking on the pitch at the famous arena with his team-mates when they were targeted, before asking officials to consider calling off the match.

Panathinaikos had asked officials to allow the game to go ahead, but would abandon the match should there be any further scenes after the whistle had blown.

But after an hour-long consultation, referee Andreas Pappas called off the game resulting in further ugly scenes in the stadium.

Supporters stormed the pitch in protest before engaging in violent battles with the Greek riot police.

Flares and chair seats were thrown at officers, who responded by firing tear gas at fans to remove them from the pitch.

It was a stark reminder of the violence at the fixture between these two great rivals last year. Panathinaikos won that game 2-1, but were later handed a three-point deduction, a two-match supporters ban and a hefty fine following a full-time pitch invasion.

A win for the second-placed Greens could have installed some life into the Super League title race.

It is suspected by local media in Athens that Olympiacos will be awarded the match with a walkover 3-0 victory.

But there could be even more drastic action as authorities consider whether they might temporarily suspend the league.

There are NO Away fans allowed in at this match = So All the trouble was caused by the Home fans who had nothing better to do with their time .

Hope the GFC - Stick to their rules and give the 3pts to the away team.

Find it bizarre how Panathinaikos are defending their fans after seeing some of the photos. Have i missed something??

Panathinaikos have urged their fans to protest against the "totally wrong and inexplicable decision" to call off their Athens derby against Olympiakos for crowd trouble.

Kick-off was delayed, and then cancelled, as Panathinaikos fans threw flares onto the pitch.

Supporters invaded the pitch and fought with riot police inside the stadium and on the streets.

The club considered quitting the league in protest, but decided against it.

In a statement, the board condemned the violence and throwing of flares, but also blamed the referee.

"The totally wrong and inexplicable decision of Andreas Pappas to postpone the start of the game led the board to the unanimous decision to send a call to the club's fans to make a peaceful rally on Wednesday at 4pm outside our historic stadium with the motto: WE CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE!

"Our wish is to protest the situation in Greek football and for the failure of the state to address the phenomena of lawlessness."

Olympiakos did not have any fans at the ground, as away supporters are banned in the Greek top flight.
