" Russell Slade blames lack of options on strikers "

BBC

22 Nov 2015

Cardiff City had only two shots on target against Derby County

Manager Russell Slade has rued Cardiff City's lack of forward options following their 2-0 defeat at Derby County in the Championship.

Cardiff, who have only scored 17 league goals so far this season, had only two shots on target.

Slade says he is close to signing a striker before the emergency loan window closes on Wednesday.

"We were a bit limited in terms of our options with one or two injuries," Slade said.

"I used all the options possible by bringing Sammy [Ameobi] on and young Matt Kennedy on in the end.

"I'm hoping it [a loan] will be sealed before Wednesday."

Cardiff faced Derby without injured duo Aron Gunnarsson and Anthony Pilkington, but Slade hopes they will be back in contention to face Burnley next Saturday.

Second-half goals from George Thorne and Andreas Weimann secured victory for Derby County, who moved up to fourth in the table.

Despite defeat, Cardiff are only three points of the play-off places in ninth and Slade could not fault his side's efforts against Paul Clement's side.

"In terms of our attitude and work ethic we kept going forward and had a couple of opportunities," Slade added.

"I thought we competed with them really well and created a few chances in the first half, all be it Derby had the lion's share of play.

"Sometimes you've got to put your hands up and we were beaten by, in the end, the better side."

You've got to create chances for the strikers! Regardless of who u have upfront! We don't create anything!

We Could have any top striker upfront but if u don't supply them they can't do anything!

He needs to blame himself! It's his squad, his tactics and set up! blame lies with the manager! Over the years in the champ we always had a 20 goal a season striker!

Earnie, jerome, chopra, McCormack to name but a few! We
Used to move the ball far quicker than we do now! Look at Leicester, decent side but they have not won a possession game this year yet sit top of the prem! It's because they move the ball quickly! Play with a tempo and with pace! They play to their strengths! They don't have world class players, but they are effective at what they do! We too have players with pace but instead we play with Whitts who slows the game down to much! Could be better used as a sub!

Derby were not flying and top of the
League yesterday! Even forest beat them recently. Which shows that if u set up right you can make a difference to a game! It's not just Derby though, Rotherham, Bristol city etc... All played us off the park! A good manager would have set us up to put these teams to the sword! Bristol were awful when they came to us yet we were still piss poor!

He is the joke of the season, agree with one of the posts that we are not creating many chances, but by getting rid of what we have is a joke. It is down to Slade to pick a team that can create chances to win games, however he puts out teams that is hard to beat first and goes for a draw or try to sneak a win by the odd goal if we are lucky :ayatollah:

So we play with lightening pace and then pass to who ????

Jones, Mason, Revell, Macheda, Doyle, ALF, Pilkington,Noone ?

This mess is about recruitment, recruitment, recruitment, recruitment,

Malky never bought pace, Ole had a scatter gun approach and just bought anybody and Slades hands are tied. This is a 4 year old story.

There is no overall game plan. We have too many expensively salaried players that even Jose Mourihno would struggle to find a system. In Jones, Dikgacoi and Whitts with have little pace or mobility, so I guess the only system i think of would be a 4231 with with Kennedy, Noone on the flanks of the 3 with Ralls as a slightly with drawn advanced CM.

Otherwise, bench these expensively player and play inferior footballer, but players who fit into the 1980's 442 template.

We're 9th, 3 points off the play offs. Our defence is strong, all we need is a creative winger, a goal scorer and Ralls/Gunnarsson in the middle and we'll be pushing for those play off spots.

Our defence has been opened up time after time this season, it's not as strong as people make out. There's only one man to thank for that, Marshall. If he gets a move in January then the cracks that man has papered over will begin to show.

Agreed

This situation has been a few years in the making after a steady strong momentum with DJ and cup finals.
At push on time, Tan blew us up.
Now he's lost interest and the fans ain't thick. Malky blew budgets and ole was scattergun

1 quality player up top or forward midfield would be massive.
It is obvious there will be no spending, but sometimes a club needs to think about momentum and next 3 seasons.
Fans need entertainment

Nobody wants to buy our players that's why so many out on loan. Far to much crap in the squad

While I totally agree with what u say!
With regards to pace. A forward pacey natural left or right sided winger can take people on, get to the byline and whip in a cross with pace, putting the defence on the back foot! Breaking with pace opens up the opposition!

We can't create anything for our front players as we move the ball too slow! Allowing the opposition time to get back behind the ball in numbers and becoming impossible to break down as we don't have that sort of quality in the middle!

Midfield has been the key area of the squad where we have been poor for several seasons. Any manager with an ounce of nous would have recruited properly in this area in the summer. Slade failed to do that and, what's more, actually got rid of useful midfield personnel. You reap what you sow.

I think I'd rather anyone to manage Cardiff right now than Slade. I remember Jones used to get a lot of stick when he was manager but he knew what was expected. The right players, for the right game, formation was good for each player. Think Slade is playing f*cking cluedo to be honest . :sladeout:

If you actually look at what Slade said - not what others have inferred he's said, then what exactly has he said that is so wrong?

Where exactly does he blame lack of options on strikers? I can't see that anywhere.

"We were a bit limited in terms of our options with one or two injuries,"

We did have a couple of injuries. Pilkington/Gunnarson so that's correct...

"I used all the options possible by bringing Sammy [Ameobi] on and young Matt Kennedy on in the end.

Slade did use the options he had available so no lies there...

"In terms of our attitude and work ethic we kept going forward and had a couple of opportunities"

"I thought we competed with them really well and created a few chances in the first half, all be it Derby had the lion's share of play."

First half we were still in it even if we were under a lot of pressure at times. Noone had the best chance of the half, so think he's got a right to say we competed well in the first half (Maybe really well is an exaggeration slightly but what manager doesn't exaggerate every now and then - if that's his biggest sin in this interview then I think it can be overlooked)

Also Jones and Ameobi all had good chances in second half to score so he's not lying about us having chances.

Our best spell of play was when we were 2-0 down so they kept going forward and showed good work ethic until the end (Derby did well to kill the game in injury time to be fair) so again Slade not saying anything outrageous there either.

"Sometimes you've got to put your hands up and we were beaten by, in the end, the better side."

Derby had a very good side last year and have added to their squad with quality considerably this season. Very few sides will walk away with points from them this season. Again Slade has the honesty to admit they are a good side - nothing catastrophic in that.

So what has Slade said in the interview quoted above that is so clueless and offensive?

No different to what malky or ole would have said after a defeat in there time at the club too be honest which is bullshit they all say chances and done well yet stats and people watching the game know different it was shit with one to two half chances in truth, every manager does it :bluescarf:

In my opinion they don't, but that's Slades fault if he's willing to accept that and gets rid of player after player, No decent manager would accept that

What can the poor man do right? You all moan that Revell is useless and he shouldn't play him, so then he loans him out and suddenly he's Lionel Messi cos he's got 1 goal in 2 games at League One. The only player Slade has bought all season then get's injured, all he's saying is it would be handy to have more options, which he has said we will have by Wednesday. :sladein:
