Russell Slade defends transfer record after number of signings fail to make any impact

21 NOV 2015

BY STEVE TUCKER

Russell Slade has signed a host of players since joining the club just over a year ago but very few have made a big impact

Many of Russell Slade's signings haven't quite worked out

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade has defended his transfer record at the club, insisting his hands are tied financially when it comes to bringing in players.

The Bluebirds boss has made a host of signings since taking over in the Welsh capital, but has seen their impact on his first team remain pretty minimal up until now.

Of Slade’s boys only Lee Peltier is a regular starter at right-back, while Scott Malone will start on the left of defence against Derby this weekend with Fabio out injured.

The 12 Slade signings who are still at the club have made just 32 starts between them this season , with Peltier accounting for 14 of them.

Lee Peltier has been a relative success

Slade famously remarked previously that the Bluebirds were no longer ‘shopping at Harrods’ and has hinted failing to keep a cap on the transfer budget could have disastrous consequences.

“I can see what people might think, but not all of your players are going to be immediate successes,” said Slade.

“But we are also not able to find the funds to get players that will probably cost you a Premier League wage or a top Championship wage.

Does Russell Slade deserve more credit?
Does Russell Slade deserve more credit for his transfers?
“It goes without saying we had to reduce the wage bill by many, many millions in the January window. It’s obvious we had to make cut-backs. I described where we were actually shopping now so we have to cut our cloth accordingly.

“We don’t want to get into a situation where one or two other clubs have got into troubled waters and had embargoes placed upon them. Look at Blackburn and Leeds, you don’t want to get your club in that sort of situation. It’s not the way you want to go because it’s very restrictive.

“It’s a possibility, the rules are very strict, you have to show evidence your club is solvent and is running along the correct lines. It’s very important.

Eoin Doyle has been loaned to Preston North End

Slade was keen to point out the success he’d had with full-backs Peltier and Malone and suggested strikers Alex Revell, who has been shipped out on loan to Wigan, and Eoin Doyle, who is at Preston, were valuable acquisitions in their own way too.

“The two who are in the team have made a good impact. The two full-backs,” added Slade.

“You’ve got great competition for full-backs. I would not change my full-backs in the Championship, I’ve got two from three and I am very happy with that.

Stuart O'Keefe is a peripheral figure
“If you go to midfield, Stuart O’Keefe was brought in to be a strong alternative in terms of a squad man, that’s what he’s come in for. He did not come into start. He came in terms of back up.

“Then the two frontmen. Eoin Doyle scored a lot of goals in League One, he’s not lived up to that yet, but that might make a little bit of time. at least he’s playing Championship football now. Revell came in and did a great job in terms of steadying and stabalising us. Sometimes you need a player to come in and do a job at the right time.

“It’s important if you are going to turn a club around, and this club needed turning around, then you need the right players in the dressing room with the right attitude and focus.”

Of the two full backs, Malone plays as Fabio is injured and Peltier is the only right back at the club so of course they are playing

About time Slade grew some balls .....start putting some pressure on his employers to deliver

We all know we are only 2 decent players away from genuine contenders

He has delivered millions in cost savings...he's done what they wanted of him...now is the time for some genuine backing from the board

Is he strong enough to get that backing...probably not

11 Slade signings have made only 18 starts between them this season. WOW!

If you compare what we spend to Derby it shows we're always gambling on players. The biggest fee was for Doyle by a long way and that was fairly modest by championship standards. Although i do think Doyle could of added something to are strike force given a chance

Slade does not have any experience, shopping at Harrods, his level is the pound shop, and he is making a real mess at that,I would be really reluctant to give this man any kind of war chest to waste

malone and Fabio are good competition on the left, both have done well this season.

i've said it before but you cant judge him on every signing as a whole, there are quite a few players who weren't brought here to go straight into the first team.

Looking at the ones that were, Doyle is obviously the biggest disappointment as he cost a considerable fee. Revell isn't good enough, peltier and malone have been two very good signings. kennedy to me looked a good signing, so i don't know whats gone on there.

overall its a mixed bag, probably 60/40 in terms of bad, but ill take it because it hasn't cost us a fortune and in peltier espeically, we have someone who has been brilliant for us this season.

Besides, if you listen to some on here, they arent slades transfers anyway.

That was 15 transfers the other week, then 14, now 12.

You can't really defend it though. Malone and Peltier ok but others not so.

However he has got other players performing above that what they were.

I can't see Connolly, Morrison, Jones or Pilkington performing any better or worse than they did previously, and Ralls and Fabio are just class at this level so would be expected to do well anyway. However with Ralls I think Slade is holding back his progress because he's inept.

Totally anti Slade bias. No other manager has played Ralls regularly.

Yes because he's only 22! He wasn't quite ready when Malky and Ole were here. But Slade insists in picking him out of position and alongside Whittingham. Thats doing him no favours at all!

Although we say he is awesome in spite of Slade but then say he is holding him back. Can't have it all.
