you need lots shots on target to win games? boro 1st shot on target 93mins!!!! didnt even go in was handled on line and goalie would saved it, but pen & goal. :o also while on subject its getting more and more that teams with less possesion than opponants are winning games, according to stats on talk radio! eg barca 75% lost recently, holland ave 70% in qual but failed to score enough goals. :thumbright:

Many times it's been said possesion means f**k all when you do nothing with it.

In my opinion, to win a football match there is nothing more essential than controlling possession, for numerous reasons:

1) If the opposition don't have the ball, they can't score.
2) If the opposition chase the ball for longer periods, they will tire quicker and be more likely to make mistakes.
3) Keeping possession is the best way for your team to conserve energy/recover.
4) Keeping possession gives your team the opportunity to drag opponents out of position and create more chances.
5) Keeping possession means the opposition have to run themselves into the ground to win the ball back, and when they eventually do, they're too tired to do anything with the ball to threaten your goal.

Of course, there are exceptions such as us beating Man City or Chelsea defending the whole game away to Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but those are one off games where a game plan gets executed successfully. Throughout the course of a full season, I would be very surprised to see the team controlling possession losing more than winning. As much as we hate to admit it, keeping possession has proved very successful for Swansea over the years.

With regards to shots on goal, I'm sure Frank Lampard will be the first to state the phrase "if you don't shoot, you don't score" is accurate. But Lampard is a quality finisher and not every team has players with the quality of Lampard's finishing ability. Another requirement is for teams to actually use their possession to create chances. I remember watching us have 60% possession at Old Trafford but we had no cutting edge in the final third. We barely managed a shot on goal and then Ashley Young with his superior quality scored a screamer to finish us off.

So to answer your question Pembroke Allan, I wouldn't say dominating possession guarantees your team winning more games, but I definitely think dominating possession guarantees your team don't lose as many games. With regards to shots, statistics can be misleading. How many shots were clear cut chances and how many were hopeful efforts from long range? A team could hit a dozen hopeful shots into the stand where the opponents keep possession, are more patient and manage to unlock the defence to create a clear cut chance. It might be their one and only clear cut chance of the game and it might be their only shot of the game, but they're much more likely to score. That's why I think there is no greater importance than keeping possession to win a football match.

Allan they got lucky tonight. Shots on target do win games, you may get lucky in a few games like Boro but over the course of the season we will lose many more games due to a weak strikeforce (minus Jones).

You always get the odd game where a team gets one shot and scores, but obviously the more shots you get on target the more likely you are to score goals. One thing for certain, if one shot in a game became a regular habbit, you would'nt get too many spectators prepared to watch that for any length of time.

Guess parr of my point is people have complained about our lack of shots but our possession as increased aso we seem to have hit an average points for our shots/ possession this season hence 7th place, also judging by last night and other games I've seen we have excellent chances of at least playoffs
