" WOULD YOU HAVE HIM AT CARDIFF CITY? "

Wed Nov 18, 2015 6:50 pm

Republic of Ireland assistant boss Roy Keane says he wants to return to club management - but after helping guide his country at Euro 2016.

Keane says he will discuss his future with Republic manager Martin O'Neill in the coming weeks as the duo plan the team's Euro 2016 challenge.

"I think that Martin knows I have that ambition to get back in the ring," said Keane, 44.

"I certainly want to stay on for the Euros, then we'll play it by ear."

Former Republic captain Keane has previously managed Sunderland and Ipswich Town.

Sunderland were 23rd in the Championship when Keane took charge of the club in August 2006 shortly after retiring as a player.

The Black Cats secured promotion in his first year in charge but Keane resigned in his second Premier League season at the Stadium of Light with the club in the relegation zone.

Keane's spell at Ipswich was unsuccessful and he was sacked by the Championship club in January 2011 after 20 months in charge.

Martin O'Neill's decision to appoint Keane as his Republic assistant surprised many but team's play-off second leg win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday night ensured a Euro 2016 place after a tough qualification campaign.

"Will this get me back in the window [for a club job]? I don't know," added Keane.

"It's been everything I hoped it would be and I've been learning a lot from Martin.

"I'm not really one for networking or applying for jobs, but I'm enjoying my role here."

Keane believes the Republic can perform much better than the performance of Giovanni Trapattoni's squad at Euro 2012 when the Irish exited after losing all three of their group games.

"I'm not sure how many people would have expected us to get out of this group," added the Republic assistant.

"So if we get a tough one - which we will - in the summer, we'll have to hopefully try to surprise one or two people.

"We won't be short on hunger and desire and determination, and with the players and the manager we have, hopefully we'll give every team we play a good game."

Personally I would.

I know he didn't do a great job at Ipswich but he was definitely a success at Sunderland I think. Wouldn't take any shit either.

Saying that, I don't think Tan would get him purely because he's no yes man.

Always liked Keane to be honest, has his moments but straight and no bullshit. I would say yes.

I'm sure his contract his up in the summer, and I can't see it being renewed.

Why not? Slade is doing everything that's being asked of him. Overall, I don't think anyone can deny Slade's done a very good job so far. Unfortunately, the majority of our fanbase are unreasonable and unrealistic. Some of our fans expect Slade to get us playing like Barcelona and hammer teams, despite Slade not being given a single penny to improve the squad this season.

Well at least Slade appears to have galvanised the squad and has us up there challenging. Keane had limited resources at Ipswich and failed. I don't think anyone can disagree that Slade is doing a much better job than Keane previously managed on limited resources.

I don't expect us to be playing like Barcelona or winning every match. What I do expect is that if a manager brings in his own players, then it's a little strange when he doesn't play them and then ships them out on loan.

Our squad is actually very strong, I'd argue it's a better team than it was in Malky's first season and look how he did.

I remember some games last season when we were shockingly bad.

I wouldn't renew his contract, and I don't think Tan will.

To be fair to you though Tonteg, you're always honest on here and a lot of the time make some good points but I can't agree here.

Would clash with Tan big time. No chance he would come here.

Fair enough Worcester, we will agree to disagree here.

My point about fans expecting Slade to get us playing like Barcelona wasn't directed at you, as I respect your posts because you're very honest and fair as well.

I know Slade has loaned out players he's signed which doesn't look good, but I don't think he's given any freedom by Tan to manoeuvre in the transfer market the way he would like to. I think because of the constraints Tan has put on Slade, every signing Slade makes will be a cheap, low risk gamble which may or may not come off.

Some signings like Peltier and Malone have come off so they're in the squad. Other signings haven't come off so they've been loaned out to hopefully allow Slade to bring someone else in. It isn't just down to Slade though, there's a transfer committee so I think it's harsh to only criticise Slade when a signing doesn't work out.

Hopefully Slade will get it right at Derby and bring home the 3 points.

No chance. Was successful with one club - Sunderland.
A big club in the championship
