Wales boss Chris Coleman looks at the positives after young players impress in 3-2 defeat to the Netherlands

The likes of Tom Lawrence and Emyr Huws showed what they can do as Coleman emphasised his pleasure at what he saw from his team against the Dutch

Wales boss Chris Coleman refused to be downbeat, emphasising the many positives despite seeing his side beaten in Cardiff for the first time since September 2013.

Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben turned on the style in the Welsh capital as he guided the Netherlands to a 3-2 friendly victory over Coleman's brave men.

But that didn't tell the whole story as Wales showed plenty of heart and no little skill to twice battle back from behind to take them to the verge of a draw.

Goals from Joe Ledley and Emyr Huws cancelled out Bas Dost and Robben strikes before a second from Dutch ace Robben sealed victory for the visitors late on.

Coleman, though, was pleased with what he saw as youngsters Tom Lawrence, Huws and Jonny Williams showed what they can do with superstar duo Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey absent through injury.

“You're always disappointed to lose but we saw a lot tonight,” Coleman pointed out.

“I was happy with the way we went about it.

“In the second half we opened up looking for a goal and they did us on the counter attack but overall I was happy.”

Asked if he was disappointed to see his side concede three times after an impressive defensive showing in their qualification campaign for Euro2016, Coleman added: “Sooner or later you are going to play against a good team and be opened up.

“You know what you're going to get with Holland. They have good players and will have a lot of the ball. You are not going to get a positive result every time.

“They were a wounded animal tonight but we weren't too shabby either.

“Overall it was a sound week and a worthy performance.”

Midfield ace Joe Allen, who missed a penalty before Ledley followed up to score from the rebound for Wales' first, was left bemoaning Robben's late winner.

“We're disappointed to lose but perhaps that shows how far we've come,” said the Liverpool and former Swansea man.

“To come from behind twice was good and there are positives we can take from this I'm sure.

“Arjen Robben has been doing that for years, he's a world class player.

“That's international football but it's just a shame we didn't hold on for a draw.”

For me, result aside, that was almost perfect. A strong performance from the team against a decent Netherlands team who were desperate for a result. Many of the players who were given a chance today have given Coleman something to think about (Lawrence especially) There are areas for Coleman to work on, but overall a performance people should be happy with in my opinion, especially with Bale and Ramsey missing. That's about as proud as I have been watching a game! :D

I concur. I was particularly impressed by Lawerence (as I was at the Andorra game), Jonny Williams and Emyr Huws.

I agree with most of what you said, particularly about Lawrence, but last night demonstrated something else, and that is,if we want to progress in the European Finals, it is essential we keep Bale and Ramsey fit

Great to see the future of Welsh football looking promising. Lawrence and huws impressed me and I think George Willian's will have a lot to offer when he is fully fit
