Children in need radio 2

Thu Nov 12, 2015 9:21 am

Id like to thank Chris Evans and all the people who have bid thousands of pounds for pleasure of brown nosing around celebrities for reminding me of the fact that I hav'nt got a pot to piss in. :laughing6:
ps. my £10 has been pledged.

Listening this morning. Turned it off pretty sharpish when it became clear the programme was dedicated to giving money to charity

The only charity I give to now is the Wales Air Ambulance.I'm sure everyone knows someone that has benefited from this service but what I was staggarred to learn was that this charity receives no government grants or Lottery funding whatsoever and is maintained by donations only and the medical staff give their time freely also.

On about air ambulances I was watching an Australian programme about flying doctors a little while back and their air ambulances are the same with no grants etc but instead go down the sponsorship route so their helicopters are plastered in advertising and that's what pays the bills.

We should be spending the lottery money on good services like the air ambulance instead of giving millions of it to athletes so we can win a few bronze medals every 4 years.

Would rather donate to something that is closer to home. Think the RBL is the only nationwide charity I do give to now. If I'm going to donate, it's normally directly to someone through a just giving page.

When you have David Cameron, David Beckham and other millionaires pleading with viewers to donate, I do think "Donate a weeks wages and you'll cover what I'll give in a life time".

Are you really that short sighted ? By providing the best help to athletes actually benefits the country by millions more in return, the amount of people who take personal fitness since 2012 has gone through the roof which saves the country in the NHS, the sales of bikes and other sporting equipment has also gone through the roof since 2012 which the sales benefit the country, places like Bike Park Wales would never have been done if it wasn't for the additional interest since 2012!!

The shortsighted view of people really puzzles me at times I got to be honest

Well let the athletes, rowers, netball players etc have the charitable donations and let the air ambulance and cancer research have the lottery money........short sighted......if you asked the public what it would like the money to go to....a third rate dicuss thrower or cancer research ill bet my house on the answer.

Because believe me going around the doors campaigning the vast majority of the general public is very shortsighted and not educated regarding finances. You mention cancer research which is a great charity yet had the country not focuses on fitness do you really think you would get so many 'races for life' etc which actually raises millions for cancer research ?

When Great Britain went to Beijing, the team benefited from £235m investment in training programmes in the years running up to the Olympics - that's a fourfold increase on what was spent [in the run up to Athens], says Prof David Forrest, a sports economist at the University of Salford.

"We spent an extra £165m and got 17 more medals, so that's about £10m a medal."

Was it worth it ???

Have you not understood anything I said ? It's not about f*cking medals it's about what happens afterwards. The health savings of millions of people taking an interest in sport after 2012 will save the NHS in the long term far more than £235 million believe me

Also as well might I say, as bad lifestyles contribute to cancer then surely by promoting sport through the Olympics actually saves the charities too doesn't it ?

The cost of the Olympic games in London was £9.2 billion pounds. and now we are closing down leisure centers, swimming pools and charging kids hundreds of pounds to hire fields to train and play football on......some good that has done us.

Once again your lack of knowledge is embarrassing.

Firstly the London Council Tax payer paid a large percentage of the cost and they were willing to do it because they knew that it would effect their house prices and look what's happened to London house prices since 2012. Then you have to be proud of the fact that the 2012 Olympics was the first once since L.A in 1984 to make a profit so that profit has helped pay for the NHS, schools etc

All olympic games, London made no profit. I deal in facts and figures, probably something to do with my degrees in engineering and maths.

Stopped listening to this a few years back.

Money for charity is great but why are these auctions only available to the very rich who are ONLY giving in return for an unpurchaseable item. Would they donate this amount with no return like most of us do?

Allow all to enter at £10/£20 a pop and pick out a winner. You would get just as much money per item.
