http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-34775466Obviously being ex Army and having served in Northern Ireland I have my own views on this.
Have total sympathy with those that lost loved ones as a result of this incident and other similiar ones.
However, what will this achieve, the "truth" is already out there, most of the soldiers will state they they believed they were coming under fire and returned same.
Would be nice for the IRA/INLA/UDA etc to have their own investigations as to what they did ( Using kids to start a riot and setting troops for snipers, indiscrimate bombings etc) and then folowed by a Public Enquiry - but that is not going to happen.
Do I see prosecutions a likelihoood - No

How about arresting Carlo (Prince Charles), commander in chief of the paras? This was a Civil Rights March. Innocent people gunned down by the British army. It's happened in Wales as well....look at Merthyr 1831 when 24 local people were killed by that army while fighting for their rights. The military h as served the Empire, often with terrible brutality. There is so much propaganda, especially this time of year....It's more like bloody north Korea.

Thank you for that - however the topic is about the arrest of soldier accused of taking part in the BS incident.
The government is happy to pursue "justice" for this incident but seem less reluctant to pursue "justice" for the victims of the terrorists - surely they should all merit the same level of closure

Agree with you Fusillier. Everyone knows what happened was shocking and wrong and ensured the troubles went on for another 30 years. But I don't see the point in raking this up and seeking out individuals. The costly and lengthy inquiry confirmed where the blame lay. Isn't it in evryones interest to move on?

Ex-army as well, and also served in Northern Ireland late 70's early 80's. My brother also served, (paras) similar time.
Both of us think the b@stards got what was coming to them. I've been in several situations where I could've returned fire but didn't because of the yellow card rules of engagement'. On one occasion, one of our men was injured in our vehicle, as a direct result of missiles thrown - he was lucky he was not killed; and only a follow up land rover was in the way of my line of sight prevented me from firing at the b@stards who ambushed us.
My view is the Good Friday agreement should have been the end of it.

The generals and politicians responsible should be brought to justice. On a point of information Gerry Adams was arrested as part of internment without trial, that is the mass arrest of suspects without any evidence in the wee six (n.Ireland). In Kenya, Cyprus and other colonial struggles the military were used to torture and put down people fighting for their freedom.

Its all political!
Now there is a better structure and mainly peace in Northern Ireland the past should be left alone.
Maybe the soldiers should have an amnesty as was given to all of the paramilitaries prior to finalising the peace process?

The government will find it much easier to prosecute a soldier they sent there - and of course it will make THEM feel better

Time to move on and let it lie. The good Friday agreement has seen lots of Republican and Loyalist murderers back on the streets .Doesn't seem right making one soldier a scapegoat.
