Atherstone thugs who attacked Barrow fans during FA cup match jailed

FOOTBALL thugs who were involved in matchday violence during a Barrow AFC cup clash at Atherstone have been given custodial sentences totalling almost 45 years

BY RUSSELL HART

Ten people were hurt when two groups of home team supporters rampaged onto the Sheepy Road pitch during half-time at Atherstone in Warwickshire, where the two teams met in the third round qualifying match on October 12 2013.

The defendants, who had either admitted or were found guilty of violent disorder after trial, were sentenced by Judge Andrew Lockhart at Warwick Crown Court over three days last week.

The final seven were in the dock on Friday. Individual sentences handed down over the three days ranged from 19 to 34 months.

Trouble erupted at half-time when Barrow were winning 4-0. An “unruly mob” of rampaging Atherstone supporters dashed over the pitch to confront fans in the Barrow stand.

An orange flare thrown over their heads into the stand was thrown back, triggering violence which Judge Lockhart said was “immediate, indiscriminate and vicious.”

Teenager Freya Dawes, age 17, had a severe asthma attack as she struggled to hold onto a large club flag, which was stolen from her as a ‘trophy’.

The flag was taken back to the Atherstone stand and set alight. Prior to the interval, Atherstone fans used a loud hailer to threaten people in the stand opposite, saying, among other things: “You are going to have your heads kicked in. We will see you at half time,” the court heard.

Bunch of thugs attacking innocent fans. Deserve everything they get. If they had pre arranged a fight then you could have a bit of sympathy but doing what they did was bullying.

I met a load of barrow fans a few years ago when they played down at Salisbury. Really nice bunch of fans who travel hundreds of miles in good numbers (300 plus at Salisbury)
