Cardiff City fans' idol Jay Bothroyd calls for Bluebirds to make former striker Craig Bellamy their manager

5 NOV 2015

BY ALEX BYWATER

Bothroyd has urged the Bluebirds to follow Swansea's successful lead by appointing a young manager who will insist upon exciting football

Cardiff City fans’ idol Jay Bothroyd believes the Bluebirds should follow the lead of arch-rivals Swansea and appoint a young, fearless manager... with Craig Bellamy the ideal candidate to take the club forward.

Bothroyd spoke out as beleaguered Bluebirds boss Slade finds himself under fire from supporters following a run of five games without a Cardiff player finding the net.

The horrific goal drought continued with Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat at Leeds and Slade knows he has to start winning over the fans with victory over Reading at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

Russell Slade under pressure as #SladeOut trends in Cardiff

But Bothroyd, who scored 45 goals in his time with the Bluebirds, believes Slade was never the right man to take charge of the capital city side in the first place.

And he's called on Cardiff’s hierarchy to take inspiration from their rivals down the M4 as they decide how to move forward and genuinely challenge for the Premier League again.

What a debut! Craig Bellamy scores a belter in his first game for the Bluebirds, wearing the club’s beautiful royal blue.
Craig Bellamy is a hero with Cardiff City fans

“It’s not my decision what Cardiff do with their manager and I certainly don’t want to get someone sacked,” said Bothroyd.

“But I’m not sure if appointing Slade was the right decision.

“If you look at Swansea’s success over the years they haven’t been scared to introduce a young manager.

“They’ve had Roberto Martinez, Brendan Rodgers and Garry Monk.

“I think Cardiff should look to do the same thing and that’s why I keep saying Craig Bellamy as a name for the future.

“There needs to be change with a strategy of moving forward and trying to be successful.”

I couldn't agree more. Craig Bellamy coming in would be a no brainer but I can't see him doing so with VT here...

Doesn't every manager at every club get hassle from supporters who aren't happy with results/performances?
If he doesn't want the hassle at all then perhaps being a football manager isn't the best path for him...
Personally, I'd love to see him come back here. He has so much passion for the club!

Craig Bellamy will take us backwards, no managerial experience and very limited coaching experience. Bring in an experienced manager and if the fans want it so bad bring in Bellamy as a number 2 for a few years to gain experience. It wouldn't work out just throwing him in the deep end.

"Craig Bellamy has ruled out managing Cardiff City, saying he “needed a couple of years to relax” having quit football at the end of last season.

The former Cardiff striker has been linked with the vacant post at his old club but he quashed talk of an immediate return to the Cardiff City Stadium.

“For me, to come away from football has been a release because the intensity that I worked at it drove me mad and everyone around me at the time,” he told The Clare Balding Show.

“I do realise if I do go into management, that’s why it’s not going to be for a few years. I want this time and I need this time to relax and enjoy things, take a step back, but I do know the intensity I’ll need to work at as a manager will be 20 hours a day. So I need this period, I need a couple of years to relax.”

Bellamy, 35, retired after 17 years in the game citing wear and tear on his body. He said he was offered the chance to take over at Cardiff when Malky Mackay left the club but turned the job down.

Asked if he would manage Cardiff now he said: “Certainly not, I had the opportunity at Christmas to do it – when Malky left they offered it to me then, I didn’t really give them the chance to get into a conversation.

“I’m not right for the club at this present moment, they need to go a different direction and the club’s not right for me at this present moment. I wouldn’t be a good enough manager, it deserves better than me at the present moment.”

Bellamy tipped the Newport-born Tony Pulis, who is out of work since abruptly leaving Crystal Palace just before the start of the season, to step into the breach.

“I’m doing my pro-licence at the moment,” he said. “I need a bit of time, there are so many little aspects of the game I’m umming and ahing about that I want to try and nail down before I make this step. Unfortunately in football your first step can sometimes be your last as well.” He added: “The obvious choice would be Tony Pulis.”

That is what CB said in a TV interview in September 2014 shortly after OGS left. The question I suppose is CB now "right for the club" and is the club "right for him".

I have no doubt he would at the very least halt the decline in ticket sales and almost certainly we would see an immediate increase in home attendances but the rest, given his lack of coaching experience would involve a leap of faith.

Having said that could he do a worse job than RS :?

Bellamy is another risk. And if the fans turned on him things would get sour quick. It's alot of pressure for his first job and he knows it. I don't think he'd take it anyway.

At least the team would give 100% under bellamy  You dont mind if you lose when you battle on the pitch. With slade its back to sunday league football the same as last season. Think slade got a love in with alex ravell that do not work

wez, I think Craig would give it (stick) back, too and would make Jose look like an angel! LOL

Certainly says what he's thinking and would love him to be given a chance, although I thought he's had a bit of a falling out with the Malaysian guy when he (apparently) turned down the job after Malky's departure? :?

I think (with the right assistant) it could work and even if it didn't, no one could say they didn't at least try

Some did, but they are the same few who turned on Malky, Tan, Slade, Sam, DJ, the players, the stewards, the ticket staff, the shop staff, the pie sellers, supporters who stand up, supporters who sit down, etc., etc., etc...

Starting to see the picture? ;) :laughing6: :laughing6:

Bellamy should take a coaching role before being in the hot seat personally.

I don't know Bellamy personally or claim to know anything about him, but when he was at Man City he asked for his wages early once and it was refused, he said the money was for his football academy now I'm not saying he is skint, but his ex Mrs took him for most of his money aswell. Maybe he could do with the money ?

That was over a year ago now and never say never, sometimes you can't decide when you want the job it's when it's offered.
