' 6 ways Cardiff City can end their goal drought at Leeds United '

02/11/15

BY GARETH ROGERS

The Bluebirds need goals and they need them quick! Here we look at how and why tomorrow night must be the time.

Cardiff City head to Leeds United on the back of a month where they only scored one goal themselves - and that was five minutes into the first game of October.

Yes, they did score in the 1-0 win against Middlesbrough , but that was an own goal, so can hardly be counted as a Cardiff City creation.

Here's how an why tomorrow presents the ideal opportunity for an Elland Road goal-spree.

Target Leeds' defence - they're in disarray :ayatollah:

If you think Cardiff City are in crisis, you clearly haven't seen Leeds United.

They were 2-0 down in six minutes at home to Blackburn on Thursday night and quite frankly they were a shambles and rightly booed off at the end.

New manager Steve Evans admits his team are six or seven players short of where they need to be and admits he won't get anybody in before tomorrow night's clash.

Added to that, star defender and captain Sol Bamba is banned and will be replaced by Giuseppe Bellusci or Scott Wootton.

It gets worse, their star midfielder Tom Adeyemi (remember him?) can't play against his parent club, so the hosts are certainly going into the game with problems. Cardiff simply must quieten the crowd and seize upon them.

So, how do they do it?

Here we look at five simple solutions to consider tomorrow night...

Drop the lop-sided midfield and play two wingers :ayatollah:

Craig Noone, Sammy Ameobi, Matthew Kennedy and Anthony Pilkington are all the kind of attack-minded widemen who love creating chances.

If only one of them plays, as has been the case this season, that player has too much responsibility to attack from either wing or central areas.

If two wingers are selected, and given licence to attack the flanks, the Bluebirds can spread play wider, play at a higher tempo and create more pressure on the opposition defence.

Yes the two wingers will have to work back and support their full backs but, even if a striker is sacrificed, Slade certainly has the personnel to play an attacker on each flank.

Make damn sure Kenwyne Jones follows his programme :ayatollah:

In his post-match interview at Ipswich on Saturday, Slade was asked directly whether Kenwyne Jones would be fit to face Leeds.

His somewhat indecisive answer was: “Hopefully he will stick to his training schedule and he will be in a position to travel with us.”

When it comes to getting your star striker fit, there should be no 'hopefully about it!

Jones, who suffered a shin injury while away on international duty, should be monitored around the clock to ensure he DOES stick to his training schedule and IS ready for the game.

Improve set-pieces and utilise Sean Morrison :ayatollah:

When Malky Mackay took the Bluebirds up to the Premier League in 2013 they started the season with a very defensive strategy but their main outlet for goals was the set-piece, especially with the quality of delivery Peter Whittingham has at his disposal.

Whittingham is still in the team and his left foot still possess the magic but for some reason, set-pieces are not yielding goals.

Defender Sean Morrison scored seven last season, and has already scored two this time around.

He is certainly a weapon that can be uitilised from corners and free-kicks, an area which clearly needs more work on the training ground.

Get Peter Whittingham to the edge of the box :ayatollah:

If Peter Whittingham is going to be an automatic pick then he needs to be utilised where he can really hurt teams – in the final third of the pitch.

It's all well and good asking him to sit in midfield, primed to play the 'killer balls', but if there is only one winger making the runs in and around the strikers, it just seems a waste to slot Whittingham into the quarterback role.

Peter Whittingham can score goals from anywhere.

Anybody who saw him in his early years at Cardiff knows that he's a very capably goal scorer, with an impressive ability to pick out the top corner from the edge of the box.

Encourage Scott Malone to attack :ayatollah:

Malone's goal against QPR is enough on it's own to show he knows where the net is.

Cardiff fans who can remember a bit further back will know he once scored a screamer against the Bluebirds, for Bournemouth, which was even better than that Loftus Road strike.

He can create goals too, as he did with an inch perfect pass to Alex Revell at Bournemouth in pre-season.

Add that to the fact his crossing stats are virtually unrivalled at Championship level, and his return to the team tomorrow night could just be a blessing in disguise for the Bluebirds.

I'd love for him to come he could play a formation that uses the team to they're strength's instead of the same boring predictable tactics that slade uses time and time again :sleepy2: :sleepy2:
