As manager in football

Malky Mackay Favourite

Football News 24/7

The bookmakers in recent days have installed Mackay as one of the favourites for the Charlton Athletic post, and he was even seen at Luzon's final game at Charlton where they were beaten 3-0 by Brentford. So it looks like Mackay could be the man to take over at the Valley, but how would he fare?

How would Mackay fare at Charlton?

Mackay's managerial career is highlighted by one incredible success amongst an otherwise disappointing managerial career.

His first venture into management came with Championship side Watford where he took over from Brendan Rodgers.

He found it difficult initially with Watford being threatened with relegation from the Championship for a large chunk of the season, but eventually under Mackay they achieved safety by April, and he guided them to a respectable 14th position.

A disappointing season followed but that didn't stop Cardiff from snatching him from Watford in the summer of 2011 on a three-year deal.

He enjoyed great success in his first season and despite not achieving promotion he was nominated for numerous manager of the month awards, as well as remarkably leading Cardiff to the League Cup final where they were narrowly beaten on penalties by giants Liverpool.

For this, Mackay was awarded a three-and-a-half year contract extension and he opted to stay and led Cardiff to the Premier League the following season, the first time Cardiff had ever reached the promise land.

Mackay oversaw an extraordinary home record where they won their first ten games and won the league at a canter. Mackay at the end of the 2012-13 season was voted manager of the season.

Cardiff endured a difficult start to their Premier League season despite incredible wins over Swansea and Manchester City.

Mackay was sacked in December 2013 by controversial owner Vincent Tan.

But worst was yet to come for Mackay who when in consideration for the Crystal Palace job was victim of a dossier sent to the LMA by Cardiff alleging wrongdoing by himself and sporting director Ian Moody. Mackay was found guilty of making racist comments about Cardiff players as well as homophobic and sexist comments.

This damaged the reputation of Mackay who stayed away from the world of management for a bit before his appointment at struggling Championship side Wigan.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan attracted a lot of criticism and several sponsors withdrew from Wigan and fans protested.

The risk proved not worth taking as Mackay couldn't prevent Wigan from getting relegated and after a miserable losing tenure at the club, was sacked in April 2015.

Mackay has been out of work since but is now being earmarked with the Charlton post. He seems like the ideal man for the job given his record working under controversial chairmen but his record at struggling Championship sides is ultimately underwhelming, and whether he will have the financial backing to achieve what he did at Cardiff only time will tell.

When he's given funds (£50m) that's when he struggles.
Thank full for what he did, getting us to the premier league. With the support he had from Tan and fans, most managers could have done it even Slade.
