" A Proper Derby match "
26/10:2015
By Nathan Blake
Cardiff City against Bristol City is a proper derby despite many people nowadays perhaps thinking the contrary, it’s always had an edge to it, always been highly-charged, and I have fond memories of the ones I played in.
The Passion
OK, it might lack the passion of the South Wales derby with Swansea City, and, let’s be honest, it lacks a bit of the downright dislike for each other that fixture always brings with it.
But there’s an added element to the Severnside derby and that is a bit of good old patriotism
The clash with the Robins brings a bit of a Wales against England vibe to it and that is always great.
We know the English tend to look down on we Welsh so it’s nice to get one over on them when we can.
I look at it this way, if the South Wales derby is brother against brother, then Cardiff v Bristol City is two strangers, one Welsh, one English, going head to head.
The Memories
I did not play in too many of them, but I do recall one in the early 1990s. It does stick in my mind because Andy Cole played for Bristol City that day and it was great to play against him.
I knew Andy pretty well. When I was a youngster at Chelsea and he was at Arsenal all the London clubs used to send their scholars to the same college. I got to know Andy there. I was studying politics, but I have no idea what Andy was studying.
I came back and signed for Cardiff and Andy went to Bristol City and that was how we ended up player each other in a Severnside derby. Happy memories.
He was soon sold to Newcastle and the rest, as they say, is history.
