Cardiff City warrior Aron Gunnarsson ready to lead Iceland at Euro 2016... even if he's struggling to feature at club level

Gunnarsson has struggled to feature for Cardiff in recent months but manager Russell Slade says he's the man to lead Iceland in France next summer
Cardiff City ‘warrior’ Aron Gunnarsson will lead Iceland out at the Euros in France next summer even if he is finding pitch time scarce for his club, according to Bluebirds’ boss Russell Slade.
For the marauding 26-year-old midfielder, this season so far has been a case of ecstasy on the international stage but frustration when it has come to life with his club in the Championship.
As skipper, Gunnarsson has helped his nation become the smallest country ever in terms of population to make a major tournament as, under the guidance of boss Lars Lagerback, Iceland sent shock-waves through the football world by qualifying in style for France.
Aron Gunnarsson says he never dreamt Iceland would qualify for a major tournament
Why Cardiff City can't afford to leave 'Iceman' Gunnarsson out in the cold for too much longer
At Cardiff City it has been a different story for Gunnarsson this campaign.
The Bluebirds win over Boro in midweek was his first league start of the season and with a handful of other cameos off the bench, he has actually managed more pitch time for club than country so far.
And with the Euros looming large at the end of this campaign, the worry for Gunnarsson will be justifying his place in Lagerback’s side if he cannot make an impact at club level.
There is even talk of Gunnarsson, who joined Cardiff from Coventry back in July 2011, perhaps looking elsewhere come the January transfer window with Burnley reportedly amongst admirers.
Slade admits that is a possibility, but has moved to assure the Icelander he still has a big part to play in the Bluebirds Championship campaign.

He needs to be captain when he gets back into the team regularly.

I much prefer him in a more forward roll in a midfield 5

One of the main causes of our possession problems and lack of creativity over the last few years imo. Whitts has been getting stick because he takes too much responsibility as the only cm that can do anything with the ball. I like gunnar he's a good battler but we have better in dico who's got more than one dimension to his game.

Struggle to see what everyone see's in gunnarson, he is very wasteful in possession and he gives away so many needles free kicks. Always seems to be off the pace...

Shouldn't be anywhere near the starting 11 .... Gives the ball away and needless free kicks far too often .

Gunners is back in the starting X1, hope everyone that kicked up a fuss is happy. Warrior my ass the bloke is a liability and the sooner him, Revell and Noone move on the better.
