Cardiff City injury update: Kenwyne Jones to miss Severnside derby with Joe Ralls in with a chance being fit

BY STEVE TUCKER

But there is better news for Joe Ralls, who is in with a shout of being fit for the Monday night clash after missing the Middlesbrough game

There has been some good news for Cardiff City boss Russell Slade on the injury front for a change.

Young midfielder Joe Ralls, who missed the win over Middlesbrough midweek, will train on Sunday following his hamstring problem and could well be fit to start in Monday’s Severnside derby with Bristol City in the Welsh capital.

And although main striker Kenwyne Jones will be out again for the Robins’ clash, his shin injury, picked up whilst on international duty with Trinidad & Tobago, is not quite as bad as feared and he will return to training in the middle of next week and he could be set to play a part when the Bluebirds travel to Ipswich on October 31.

Slade knows a win against Bristol City could see his side force their way into the top six in the Championship depending on this weekend’s results and the return of Ralls, who limped off in a draw at Preston recently, could prove a big boost for the Bluebirds’ boss.

“He has done well, Joe has played an integral part for us this season, so it is good to see him back,” said Slade.

“We knew it wasn’t major and he will train with us on Sunday. It was good we took him off half-time at Preston, it could have been worse and then he’s out long term. A grade one can become a grade three tear. That would have been disappointing. We made the right move. Now he’s given himself a chance to be in team for Monday.

“Kenwyne is struggling to make the Bristol City game. There is still some swelling there and that has a impact on weight bearing and just every day movement. It will get better. A few more days and it should be a little bit freer for him.”

A number of longer term injury issues for the Bluebirds also have an end in sight according to Slade.

Centre-back Bruno Manga, who injured a hamstring on international duty playing for Gabon, will return to training on December 7, but another Bluebirds’ defender, Ben Turner, could add to Slade’s options a lot sooner.

Turner, who had surgery on an ankle injury, should be back in training on November 1 with the player set to be given a first outing in a development game on November 13. Striker Federico Macheda should return to training on November 15 after his protracted absence with a back problem which also saw him require an operation.

Slade added: “That is the plan now with all these players. But things change so give us a few days leeway with them.”

That is bad news.

I still say that Kenwyne is one of the most important players for us - both in attack and defence.
