Bluebird Jones exhibition: Cardiff City comic art, Cardiff O

Fri Oct 16, 2015 5:32 pm

Hi everyone

Some of the older City fans may remember the Bluebird Jones comic that used to be sold at City games in the mid-1990s.

We ran to five issues, each one with a print run of 1,000 and was at the time the UK's fastest selling small press comic (and the only fully fledged football comic fanzine in the UK!).

If anyone is interested in seeing some of the strips (and some of the original artwork), there's a free exhibition in the Andrew Buchan bar in Albany Road, Cardiff, running from this Saturday until the 1st Feb next year. The bar has loads of delicious Rhymney Ales so even if you don't like the comic you can still enjoy the beers!

I'll be there on Saturday and giving a little talk about the background to the comic on Sat at 7.30pm is anyone's interested, and there'll be DJs still late. All welcome!

I loved the zine, and bought every copy, it was great reading. However, aren't you one of those people who slagged off fans who kept on supporting us during the rebrand, and even still has no time for the club anymore? I'm happy to be proved wrong...

It was a mixture of things that took the fun out of supporting City for me: I preferred Ninian Park to the efficient but bland new stadium, all seater stadiums and the hassle getting ever-more pricey tickets made it difficult for me to hang out with my mates - and the rebrand farce kind of killed it for me.

I was hugely disappointed the way that some fans warmly embraced the whimsical rebrand. I didn't slag off fans for still going, but my eyebrow raised at anyone waving around a red scarf.

I don't want to get into a row about it: people all want different things from their time at football, and paying a bomb to sit alone in a seat miles from my mates stopped being my idea of fun so I stopped going.

Fair enough, hope the exhibition goes well, I'll pop in next time I'm in the area.

Cheers - it went pretty well, I think and we got some good coverage in the echo and on Wales Online.

It was lovely to meet some old faces on Saturday (and drink the excellent beer!) and I'll be adding a lot more artwork to the exhibition over the coming weeks too so there'll be more to see for people coming back.

I'm also hoping we can do a special relaunch night in late Nov/early Dec where I'll try to put together a slideshow of some of my old City pics from the 90s onwards.
