TERRY’S CARDIFF CITY NIGHTMARE XI

TERRY'S WORST IN 20 YEARS

16/10/15

Peter Zois, left, Winston Faerber, top right, and Fan Zhiyi
Goalkeeper: Peter Zois

Dimi Konstantopoulis or Peter Enckelman might have been suggested, but Australian keeper Zois is my man. Signed for City on trial in 1998, but his only appearance came in a 2-2 draw against Rotherham. His performance was erratic and manager Frank Burrows cancelled his trial the next day. Aged 37, he coaches in Australian football these days.

Right-back: Winston Faerber

The defender from Surinam joined Cardiff from Dutch club Den Haag in 1999. Made more than 30 appearances, but struggled to settle and was released from his contract. Played for Den Bosch and moved into amateur football.

Centre-half: Fan Zhiyi

Former Asian player of the year, a Chinese international who signed for Second Division City in 2002 and came here with a huge reputation.Sent off at Colchester and made only six appearances. Retired and moved into coaching, his last job was with Shanghai East Asia.

Centre-half: Anthony Gerrard

We just didn’t get on. Not sure why? Gerrard is a decent enough defender who didn’t make the most of his ability with Cardiff. His penalty miss in the League Cup final against Liverpool was devastating and he tweeted “Sorry to everyone!”

Left-back: Simon Lappin

Scottish defender who signed for City in 2012, but made only two league appearances. Was sent off on his debut at Barnsley, the first Cardiff player to be dismissed in more than a year. Re-joined Cardiff after the initial loan period, having left Norwich, but didn’t make another appearance. Plays for St Johnstone.

Right-midfield: Willie Boland

Wasn’t an easy guy to get on with. Signed for Cardiff in 1999 and made 242 appearances. Wouldn’t speak to the media for most of his stay in South Wales - and revealed as he left one reason was that I had given him a low match rating early on in his stay... 2 out of 10 against Luton.

David Penney, left, Jorn Schwinkendorf, top right, and Jeff Whitley

Centre-midfield: David Penney

Joined Cardiff from arch-rivals Swansea and was never able to win over fans. Andy Legg made the same move and became a cult idol, but Yorkshireman Penney didn’t settle despite scoring five goals in 35 league appearances. Succeeded Jason Perry as Bluebirds captain in 1997-98, but left quickly enough and moved into management with Doncaster, Darlington, Bristol Rovers, Oldham and Southend.

Centre-midfield: Jorn Schwinkendorf

A 6ft 5ins defender who never made the most of that height. He simply didn’t jump to win enough headers in my view and made only five league appearances before newly-appointed manager Billy Ayre made him available for transfer. He had been signed for £110,000 from SV Waldhof Mannheim. Aged 44, he has moved into management.

Left-midfield: Jeff Whitley

Whitley joined Cardiff from Sunderland in 2005. He made 38 league and cup appearances, but struggled to settle and failed to make an impact. He became a car salesman in the Stockport area and delivers talks at professional football clubs about the dangers of alcohol misuse.

Striker: Iwan Reden

Joined City on loan from Willem II, but made only two appearances as a substitute before heading back to Holland. He played a total of 36 minutes first-team football. Returned to Willem, but was released.

Striker: Luigi Glombard

Former French under-18 international who made six appearances for the Bluebirds. Made the move from Nantes to Cardiff with the reputation of being a speedy forward. His only start came at Norwich during a 1-0 defeat, where he memorably sent Robert Earnshaw running clear... but Earnie was playing for Norwich by then! Glombard, 31, plays for French League Two club US Orleans.

Subs: Dimi Konstantopoulis, Juan Cala, Toni Koskella, Magnus Eikrem, Phil Mulryne, Michael Chopra, Jo Inge Berget.

Michael Chopra ????

I don't like to criticise any present or former Bluebirds but what about the likes of Kevin "arm in a sling" summerfield back when? Why did we buy him ? surely deserves a mention?

Blooobirds Forever !!! :bluescarf: :bluebird:

I think Willie Boland being in that 11 is very harsh! Never gave less than 110 % IMO

I thought that about Chopra! A strange inclusion! :o

He doesn't state 'why' on the likes of Chopra are in there and it also seems a little odd that Gerrard and Willie Boland (not a bad player at all) are included, too. Seems obvious that this is Terry's "Clash of Personality XI" rather than a genuine "Nightmare XI" and that is disappointing

Perhaps we should get together a "Media Wales Nightmare XI" where Tucker would be the rudderless captain for me! :laughing6:

Got to remember chops was a nightmare.

Would order pizzas to the stadium, stayed in strip clubs until 1-2 am night brfore games, left award night early to go on the piss.

Never gonna be easy to manager or write about.

Boland is a strange one and chopra shouldn't be near the list.
