Mass brawl between Bradford and Burnley fans left York train guard terrified
Judge Stephen Ashurst

SEVEN men have appeared in court after they followed up their drinking sessions with a mass train brawl.
Five Bradford men had been celebrating a 21st birthday party and two Burnley men had been to York races before they all caught the 6pm Northern Rail York to Blackpool service to go home, York Crown Court was told.
Michael Cahill, prosecuting, said good-natured banter and football songs in the rear coach degenerated into a mass fight soon after the train set off. The violence was so bad, the conductor was afraid to go into the carriage to check tickets.
In a video shown to the court, passengers could be seen throwing punches and parts of the train seats about.
Train staff alerted transport police, the brawl spread to the platform at Church Fenton and some of the fighters ran off.
"It is quite clear at the very heart of this case was the part alcohol played in causing or triggering the disgraceful behaviour that all seven of you displayed," the Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, told the seven.
Adam Richard Pearson, 22, of Huddersfield Road, Bradford, Daniel James Murdoch, 28, of Towngate, Wyke, Bradford, Joshua Hiley, 25, and Farren Denton, 20, both of Storr Hill, Wyke, and Paul Flavell, 38, of Wyke Lane, Wyke, all admitted affray and were ordered to do 120 hours' unpaid work and pay £800 prosecution costs.
Darren Sharples, 48, of Chiltern Avenue, Burnley, and Andrew Sharples, 44, of Brownside Road, Burnley, admitted a public order offence and were ordered to do 80 hours' unpaid work and pay £400 prosecution costs.
Their barrister Michael Blakey said they had been provoked by others and had not started the violence.
Solicitor advocate Lee-Anne Robins-Hicks did not offer mitigation after the judge said he would not pass prison sentences.
The court heard all seven were in work and had no previous court convictions.
Mr Cahill said fans of Blackpool and Burnley football clubs had been exchanging good-natured banter and singing songs in the train on June 14, 2014. But when Bradford City fans joined in, the situation got ugly. No-one was seriously injured.
