Dempseys in Cardiff defended its decision to show the dead rubber England v Uruguay rugby match, saying its customers wanted to watch it

Furious Welsh football fans have vowed to boycott a Cardiff city centre pub after it decided to show England’s Rugby World Cup dead rubber match against Uruguay instead of Wales’ historic football match against Bosnia on Saturday night.

Dempseys in Castle Street has defended its decision, saying customers were more interested in watching the England match.

The football game in Bosnia saw Wales qualify for its first major tournament in 57 years.

The pub's decision caused anger on social media, after being highlighted by Welsh football supporters' band The Barry Horns on Twitter.

They described the decision to show England instead of Wales on the pub’s big screens as “the lowest of the low”.

In response, Chris Roderick wrote: “Will never, ever, ever, ever drink in there again then. Ever.”

Grant Evans said Dempseys actions were “shameful” and Nathan Low said they should be “embarrassed”.

Others wrote that the pub had now lost their custom.

Twitter user bluebird wrote: “I drink in Dempseys all the time. Never ever going back, I drink in Wales not England.”

The Barry Horns added: “From what I’ve heard English pubs had the Bosnia game on up and down the country, with some support.

“Dempseys should have all its pseudo Celtic paraphernalia removed and just show its true colours.”

Brains Brewery, which owns the pub, defended its actions, claiming that the majority of customers wanted to watch the rugby.

Natasha Williams, senior operations manager, said: “We are a proud Welsh hospitality retailer, who for a number of years sponsored the WRU.

“We are fully focused on the needs of our guests and on this occasion, the majority of those at Dempseys, Cardiff, favoured watching the England vs Uruguay rugby match as consequently the decision was made to show it.”

Complete wankers. We were of the verge of making history and England on the verge of going out of their own egg chasing World Cup.

Dempseys hang your head in shame. :old:

The Park Hotel in Barry has at least 4 tv's where different channels can be watched at the same time. Has Dempseys got Sky? I went to a pub in Dinas Powys to watch the rugby and football expecting the pub to empty a bit when the rugby finished but it was even busier and there was a great atmosphere in there.

Well if those pubs were already paying for SKy then that is bad form. You must remember that SKY charge a small fortune for its commercial customers and one nights takings behind the bar is not worth it.The rugby is free.

Same happened in the Marine in Porthcawl! Even though quite a few left after the rugby, even more came in, it was almost impossible to get a drink for the football!! Plus everyone was joining in with songs for the football, whereas the rugby was just the usual screaming women

I don't agree with it, but shit happens, especially in City centre pubs. If the majority of the drinkers in Dempseys wanted to watch the Rugby, then the landlord made the right decision. Don't go there again if you're not happy with what they did.
In the pubs and clubs of the Rhondda, there were great crowds in the boozers for both the rugby and the football, just as it should be.

you actually think that a non discript one sided game with two foreign teams with no meaning had more appeal than a crucial football game involving home team? :laughing6:

I wonder if they'll be showing the Wales games from France next summer?

Hopefully people will have long memories and avoid these pubs next summer. Hit these arseholes in the pocket and watch the games elsewhere.

And avoid drinking that Brains slop at all times!

Haven't drunk in walkabout cardiff for years since they refused me entry as I was wearing a city pin badge. Another one to add now to the list.

If anyone wants to watch Sport on TV in Cardiff then I thoroughly recommend the Three Rivers (formally Varsity) on Greyfriars road. Great atmosphere, a good pint and friendly staff. :ayatollah:

Hopefully the council or whatever, will set up "fan zones" around cardiff and the rest of Wales, like they have done with the rugby, world cup, so everyone not going to France can watch the games on a big screen with a pint out in the sun with thousands of like minded supoorters

Just how do they know most people wanted to watch the rugby? did they do a survey? or just asked a few customers on a rugby night? Brains you are and have always been a rugby orientated company, and that is why you are showing an insignificant game, and not the Wales game, not because it is what people want. I hope you lose a massive amount of custom in all your pubs, run by a bunch of tossers

is this post a wind up? surely it is...........do you follow football? Cardiff? If Cardiff were on tv and you couldn't get a ticket for the game, and your boyfriend was hogging the tv back home, you wouldn't watch them in the pub then? No?

I don't know, I wasn't in there, there's always loads of joking Irish people outside there when I go past. Maybe the majority of them wanted to watch the Egg, only people that were there would know!
