Carlton Cole is a transfer target for Bolton Wanderers
The Trotters have only scored nine goals in the league this season and are desperate to add a striker to their ranks to keep them floating above the relegation zone, where they currently reside.
They had a loan offer for Charlton striker Igor Vetokele knocked back a couple of weeks ago, and are now set to offer a move for Cole, who is a free agent.
The former Chelsea striker was released by West Ham last summer, and has been training with Scottish Champions Celtic over the last few weeks.
Ronny Delia’s side are the favourites to sign him but, after Sam Allardyce’s appointment at Sunderland this week, he’s also been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light as well to team up with his former boss.
This means there’s plenty of competition for his signature, but Emile Heskey, Gary Madine, Zac Clough and Max Clayton need more help up front.
Cole would certainly benefit a side seriously struggling to score goals, after scoring 15 goals in the second tier to help Allardyce’s West Ham seal promotion back in 2012. His experience of the division could be vital to Neil Lennon’s side, who are battling the drop.
