New Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce wants Southend United Phil Brown to be his assistant manager in his new job at The Stadium of Light, according to the Mirror.
Could Southend manager Phil Brown join Sam Allardyce at Sunderland?
The current Shrimpers manager, who has been in charge at Roots Hall since March 2013, was “Big Sam’s” number two for six years during their tenure at Bolton Wanderers, and Allardyce wants to renew the partnership in the North East.
Brown is currently in charge of Southend United in League One after managing to clinch play-off promotion from League Two last season – he currently has a 41.73% win ratio at the club.
His Southend side beat Port Vale 1-0 at Roots Hall this afternoon, which takes the newly-promoted side up to seventh place in League One. Brown will have a big decision to make if the speculation is indeed true.
Before Allardyce got the job at Sunderland, Brown backed him to be the man for the role, saying: ‘Sam is the man for the job. For me, he is the outstanding candidate.’
Allardyce has vasts amount of Premier League experience and has taken the reins of many Premier League clubs with big expectations, including Newcastle United, West Ham United and now, Sunderland.
Brown is a lifelong Black Cats fan, and a very good friend of Allardyce’s.
There seems to be an opportunity for him to team up with Allardyce once again, but whether he wants to leave the good work he is doing at Southend very much remains to be seen.

I thought he would go and get that Blackpool manager that was his previous assistant.

Dunno why. But hate seeing a manager of a rival going to another.
