Football fans have appeared in court over trouble at the Boro v Leeds game.

A teenager from Middlesbrough and two men from West Yorkshire were charged with separate offences relating to football disorder during or after the Riverside match on Saturday, September 27.

Adam Stephen Fowler appeared at Teesside Magistrates Court today and admitted being drunk and disorderly following the game on Riverside Road.

The 19-year-old was part of a group seen shouting abuse.

Prosecuting, Rachel Dodsworth, said: “Mr Fowler was seen to throw an item at passers-by and shout at them.

“A Special Constable approached him, identified he was drunk and Mr Fowler was arrested for being drunk and disorderly.”

Fowler, of Hesleden Avenue in Acklam, represented himself in court and pleaded guilty to the charge.

He told the court: “A Leeds fan spat in my face which made me retaliate in the heat of the moment. I can remember it, I was drunk but wasn’t out of it.

“I have been supporting Boro since I was a little kid. I don’t think it is serious enough to get a banning order.”

Magistrates agreed he should not receive a football banning order but imposed a six-month conditional discharge and ordered the teenager to pay £250 in costs and charges.

Meanwhile, two men from West Yorkshire also appeared in relation to other alleged offences at the game.

Nigel Pamment, 45, admitted throwing a missile on to the pitch from the visiting fans’ area.

He told police the plastic bottle had originally been thrown by Boro fans at the Leeds supporters which caused him to react in anger. He admitted it was “stupid” and apologised.

Pamment, of Wellhouse Avenue, Mirfield, will be sentenced for the offence and oppose a potential football banning order on November 6 at Teesside Magistrates Court.

Also from West Yorkshire, 44-year-old Matthew John Wood, has denied using threatening words or behaviour at the game.

Wood, of Benton Mews in Horbury, Wakefield, was granted unconditional bail and will next appear at the court for trial on November 11.
