A man has been arrested following ‘disorder’ between clashing groups of Sheffield United and Port Vale fans that led to one police officer sustaining a fractured ankle and another being cut in the face after being struck with a piece of concrete.

The violence is believed to have broken out following yesterday’s fixture at Vale Park between Port Vale and Sheffield United.

A Staffordshire police spokesman said: “Disorder occurred as groups of home supporters attempted to clash with elements of visiting fans.

“The small number of police officers on duty for the fixture formed lines between the groups to prevent the disorder becoming more serious.

“Police and club stewards worked hard to deal with those involved.

One male has been arrested on suspicion of affray following the incident.

Chief Inspector Amanda Davies, Commander of the police operation said “It became apparent there were groups of people intent on being involved in criminal disorder. Two officers were injured, one has been taken to hospital with a suspected fracture to her ankle and the second officer had cuts to his face after being struck with a piece of concrete.

Police are now examining the body worn footage and CCTV recorded during the disorder.

And yet I was in Cardiff city centre on Friday afternoon with probably over 100,000 fans from different teams all over the world. No fighting, no chanting vile things at each other - everyone was able to get along just fine.

Why is it that football provokes such behaviour in people and rugby doesnt ? - is it the sport or the people who follow it - that make it so.

Yesterday at Brighton was fantastic. Took my middle boy and met with a load of city in the pub. Drunk a bit too much but had a safe day out. I love the culture associated with 80s football in terms of clothing and music etc. never been a violent person. So glad footballs moved on in Cardiff

That's bullsh1t. Why does domestic violence increase in s Wales during 5 nations? Why are the clubs and pubs full of morons fighting during egg chasing. When Annis had his pubs he had more trouble during rugby than football.

Gareth's, spot on there, I saw more trouble of rugby fans than football fans, but the authorities turn a blind eye and it's all called fun, so no one is antiganised at rugby.

Yesterday at Brighton we were treated with respect,so 99.99% of our fans showed respect back :thumbright: :bluebird:

It is complete bollox. I know a few coppers and they say it's horrendous everywhere when the rugby is on, in pubs, on the streets and domestic violence. Lots of violent pissed up woman out there too allegedly. Violence at football was always pretty confined between a 100 or so on each side. Rugby could be almost anyone who has drunk too much which is rife let's face it.

Rugby fans are allowed, it's called high spirits! If you even look at a football fan in the wrong way you will get a knock. Not worth it in a million years, young men have always fought its human nature but some in that video stuck in the eighties

Haha you shudda stuck round untill they all got pissed. Last time Wales played England at home there were 40 arrests with pissed rugby fans the media just don't blow it up. There's more scraps in Cardiff following internationals than any other night of the calender year and that mate is a fact. So your talking bollocks I'm afraid.

Lets not forget Welsh rugby players are also always fighting, getting filled in and getting arrested on nights out in Cardiff. It's a vile sport, played by cunts and watched by cunts.
